Thus the word of the LORD came to me: “Go and buy a linen belt, and put it around your waist, but do not let it get wet in water!”

So I bought a belt, as the LORD had spoken, and put it around my waist.

Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time, saying:

“Take the belt that you bought, which is now on your waist, and go at once to the Euphrates River, and hide it there in a cleft of the rocks!”

So I went and hid it by the Euphrates River, as the LORD commanded me.

After many days the LORD said to me: “Go at once to the Euphrates River and take from there the belt that I commanded you to hide there!”

So I went to the Euphrates River, and I dug and took the belt from the place where I had hidden it, but there it was: the belt had become ruined, good for nothing.

Then the word of the LORD came to me:

“Thus says the LORD: In this way I will destroy the pride of Judah and Jerusalem.
10
This evil people, who refuse to hear My words, who follow the stubbornness of their heart and go after other gods to serve them and bow down to them, shall become like this belt, which is good for nothing.
11
For as a belt clings to a person’s waist, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to Me, says the LORD, that they might be for Me a people, a name, a praise, and an honor. But they would not listen.”

“Say to them this word: Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Every jar must be filled with wine! And if they say to you, ‘Do we not know very well that every jar must be filled with wine?,’
13
then say to them: Thus says the LORD: Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land with drunkenness: the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
14
I will dash one against another until they are shattered, fathers and sons together, says the LORD. I will destroy them without pity, without compassion, and without mercy.”

Hear and give ear; do not be proud,
for the LORD has spoken.
16
Give glory to the LORD your God
before He brings darkness,
before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains,
while you look for light,
but He turns it into deep gloom and makes it thick darkness.
17
If you will not listen to it,
I will weep in secret because of your pride;
my eyes will weep bitterly,
yes, they will run down with tears,
because the flock of the LORD has been taken captive.

Say to the king and to the queen mother:
“Sit down in a very low place,
for your crown of glory has come down from your head!”
19
The cities of the Negeb have been shut up,
and there is no one to open them.
All Judah has been carried away into exile,
carried away completely.
20
Lift up your eyes, O Jerusalem, and see,
those are coming from the north!
Where is the flock that was given to you,
the sheep of your glory?
21
What will you say when those you treated as your companions
are set over your head?
Will not pain seize you
like a woman in labor?
22
And if you ask in your heart,
“Why have all these things come upon me?”
Because of the greatness of your guilt
your skirts are lifted up, and you are violated!

Can the Ethiopian change his skin
or the leopard its spots?
Then can you also do good,
you who are accustomed to do evil?
24
I will scatter them like chaff
carried off by the wind of the wilderness.

This is your lot, the portion measured out to you,
declares the LORD,
because you have forgotten Me
and trusted in falsehood.

I myself will also lift up your skirts over your face,
so that your shame will be seen.
27
Your adulteries and your neighings,
your shameless prostitution on the hills and in the fields—
I have seen your abominations.
Woe to you, O Jerusalem!

Jeremiah 13 contains a symbolic parable and a sharp prophecy from God to Judah.
