You are indeed right, O LORD, when I contend with You!
Yet I would speak with You about justice:
Why does the way of the wicked prosper,
and why are all the faithless at ease?

You plant them, and they take root;
they grow and bear fruit as well.
You are always on their lips,
but far from their hearts.

But You, O LORD, know me; You see me,
and You test how my heart is toward You.
Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,
and set them apart for the day of slaughter. —
4
How long must the land mourn,
and the grass of every field wither?
Because of the wickedness of those who live in it,
beasts and birds have vanished;
for they have said, “He will not see our ways!”

“If you have run with footmen, and they have wearied you,
how will you compete with horses?
And if in a peaceful land you feel secure,
what will you do in the thickets of the Jordan?

For even your brothers and your father’s house,
they too have dealt treacherously with you;
they too are behind you in a body.
Do not trust them, even when they speak fair words to you!

I have forsaken My house,
I have abandoned My inheritance;
I have given the beloved of My soul
into the hand of her enemies.

My inheritance has become to Me
like a lion in the forest;
she has lifted up her voice against Me,
therefore I hate her.
9
My inheritance has become to Me
like a speckled bird;
the birds of prey are all around her.
Come, gather all the beasts of the field,
bring them to devour her!

Many shepherds have ruined My vineyard,
they have trampled down My portion,
and have made My pleasant portion
a desolate wilderness.

They have made it a desolation;
desolate, it mourns before Me!
The whole land is made desolate,
yet no one lays it to heart.
12
Destroyers have come
through all the bare heights in the wilderness;
for the sword of the LORD devours
from one end of the land to the other;
there is no peace for any flesh.
13
They have sown wheat, but have reaped thorns;
they have worn themselves out, but gained nothing.
They shall be ashamed of their harvest,
because of the fierce anger of the LORD.”
14
Thus says the LORD:
“Concerning all My evil neighbors who touch the inheritance that I have given My people Israel, behold, I will uproot them from their land, and I will uproot the house of Judah from among them.”
15
But after I have uprooted them, I will have compassion on them again.
I will bring each one back to his inheritance
and each one to his land.
16
And if they truly learn the ways of My people,
so that they swear by My name, ‘As the LORD lives,’
as they once taught My people to swear by Baal,
then they shall be built up in the midst of My people.
17
But if they will not listen,
then I will surely uproot and destroy that nation,
declares the LORD.”
🌿🕊️⚖️ Summary of Jeremiah 12 – The Prophet’s Questions and God’s Answer about Rampant Evil
Jeremiah 12 is an emotional dialogue between the prophet and God. Jeremiah questions God’s justice, asking why the wicked seem to prosper while the righteous suffer. The prophet pours out his heart, yet God makes clear that Jeremiah’s faithfulness will be tested even more severely. God also reveals betrayal from within His own house, and because of this, judgment will be brought upon Judah. Yet at the end of the chapter, there is a promise of restoration — even for foreign nations, if they will turn to the LORD.
📌 1. Jeremiah Questions God’s Justice (verses 1–4)
“You are righteous, O LORD, yet I would plead my case with You…”
➡️ Jeremiah asks: why do the wicked succeed? Why do they live at ease though full of evil?
🎯 Even a prophet can wrestle with the mystery of divine justice — this is not rebellion, but an honest outpouring of the heart.
📌 2. The LORD Answers with a Harder Challenge (verses 5–6)
“If you have run with footmen, and they have wearied you, how will you contend with horses?”
➡️ The LORD challenges Jeremiah to grow in endurance, because harder trials are coming.
🎯 Faithful living does not mean ease — God is training us for a greater calling.
📌 3. Betrayal from Within the House (verse 6)
“Even your own brothers… have betrayed you.”
➡️ Jeremiah was betrayed by those closest to him, even his family.
🎯 The deepest wounds often come from those nearest to us — but God knows and does not let it be in vain.
📌 4. The Lord Is Angry with the People Who Betray (verses 7–13)
“I have forsaken My house… My inheritance I have given into the hand of its enemies.”
➡️ The Lord describes Judah as a wild lion and a ruined garden. Because of their betrayal, the Lord hands them over to destruction.
🎯 There is a limit to the Lord’s patience. When the people keep rebelling, blessing turns into judgment.

➡️ Even foreign nations can be restored if they learn to know the Lord and turn away from their evil way.
