Jeremiah 8

Jeremiah 8 – Sin and Its Punishment, Lament for Judah and Jerusalem

1
At that time, declares the LORD, the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of its officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of all the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be brought out of their graves.

2
And they shall be spread out before the sun, before the moon, and before all the host of heaven, which they had loved, served, followed, consulted, and worshiped. They shall not be gathered up or buried; they shall become dung on the face of the ground.

3
But all the survivors of this evil family shall prefer death to life in all the places where I have driven them, declares the LORD of hosts.

4
You shall say to them: “Thus says the LORD: When people fall, do they not rise again? If one turns away, does he not return?

5
Why then has this people turned away, turning away continually? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return.

6
I have listened and heard: they do not speak what is right! No one repents of his wickedness, saying, What have I done! Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse rushing into battle.

7
Even the stork in the sky knows its appointed time, and the turtledove, the swallow, and the crane keep the time of their coming, but my people do not know the law of the LORD.

8
How can you say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Truly, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie.

9
The wise shall be put to shame, they shall be dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; so what wisdom is in them?

10
Therefore I will give their wives to others, and their fields to conquerors. For from the least to the greatest, everyone is greedy for gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.

11
They have treated the wound of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.

12
They should have been ashamed, because they have done an abomination; yet they were not at all ashamed, and they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; at the time of their punishment they shall stumble, says the LORD.

13
When I would gather them, declares the LORD, there are no grapes on the vine, no figs on the fig tree, and the leaves are withered; therefore I have appointed for them those who shall trample them.”

14
Why do we sit still? Gather yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities, and let us perish there! For the LORD our God has doomed us, and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.

15
We looked for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror!

16
“The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan; at the sound of the neighing of his stallions the whole land trembles. They come and devour the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell in it.

17
For behold, I am sending among you serpents, vipers that cannot be charmed, and they shall bite you,” says the LORD.

18
My sorrow is beyond healing; my heart is faint within me.

19
Listen! the cry of the daughter of my people from a land far away: ‘Is the LORD not in Zion? Is her King not within her?’ — Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images and with foreign idols? —

20
The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

21
For the hurt of the daughter of my people I am hurt; I mourn, and dismay has taken hold of me.

22
Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the healing of the daughter of my people not come?

  • The people keep falling, but they do not want to rise, not knowing that they have turned aside
  • They are “wise” in the Law, but they reject the voice of the Lord’s prophet
  • The prophets and priests heal the nation’s wound “lightly”: saying peace when there is no peace
  • Shameless = no longer able to feel that they are sinful
  • 🎯 When the heart has grown hard to rebuke, judgment is the only remedy left.

📌 3. The Harvest Vanishes, Hope Fails (verses 13–17)

    “No grapes, no figs…”

    • The sign of the vanished harvest = the Lord’s blessing has been withdrawn
    • The people knew the enemy was coming from the north, yet they were despairing, not repenting
    • The Lord sends venomous serpents: a judgment that cannot be controlled

🎯 When worldly hope collapses, the only way is to return to the Lord — or sink.

    📌 4. Jeremiah Weeps (verses 18–22)

“Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?”

    • Jeremiah gives voice to the Lord’s own lament: why will the people not be healed?
    • Gilead was known for healing balm, yet the people reject spiritual medicine
    • Deep sorrow: “The season has passed… we have not been saved.”

🎯 The Lord always provides the remedy, but many reject His prescription.

    📖 Main Teaching

    • Sin that is not mourned will end in disgrace
    • Rejecting the Lord’s rebuke means rejecting spiritual healing
    • Religion without repentance only patches wounds superficially
    • There is a time for harvest and healing — but it is not always available
    • A stubborn heart cannot feel guilt or longing for the truth
