If only my head were full of water, and my eyes a fountain of tears, then day and night I would weep for the slain of the daughters of my people!

If only I had in the wilderness a lodging place for travelers, then I would leave my people and go away from them! For they are all adulterers, a company of unfaithful people.

They bend their tongue like a bow; falsehood and not truth prevail in the land; indeed, they go from evil to evil, but the LORD they do not know.
4
Let everyone be on guard against his neighbor, and put no trust in any brother, for every brother is a deceiver, and every friend goes about as a slanderer.

One deceives another, and no one speaks the truth; they have trained their tongue to speak lies; they commit wrongdoing and are too lazy to turn back.

Oppression is piled upon oppression, deceit upon deceit! They refuse to know the LORD.

Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: “Behold, I will melt them and test them, for what else can I do because of the daughter of my people?
8
Their tongue is a deadly arrow; the words from their mouth are deceit; they speak peace with their neighbor, but in their heart they lay an ambush for him.
9
Shall I not punish them for these things? declares the LORD. Shall I not avenge Myself on a nation such as this?
10
Weep and wail for the mountains, and lament for the pastures of the wilderness, for they are laid waste so that no one passes through them, and the sound of livestock is no longer heard; both the birds of the air and the beasts have fled and are gone.
11
I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a lair for jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”
12
Who is the wise man, that he may understand this? To whom has the mouth of the LORD spoken, that he may declare it? Why has this land perished, laid waste like a wilderness, so that no one passes through?

And the LORD said: “Because they have forsaken My law, which I set before them, and have not listened to My voice or walked in it,
14
but have followed the stubbornness of their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them.”
15
Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will feed this people with wormwood and give them poisoned water to drink.
16
I will scatter them among nations that neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them.”
17
Pay attention! Call for the mourning women, that they may come; send for the skillful women, that they may come!
18
Let them hurry and raise a lament over us, so that our eyes may run with tears and our eyelids flow with water.
19
For a sound of lament is heard from Zion: “How we are ruined! We are greatly shamed! For we must leave the land, because our dwellings have been torn down.”
20
Now hear the word of the LORD, O women; let your ear receive the word from his mouth. Teach your daughters a lament, and each woman her neighbor a dirge:
21
“Death has come up through our windows, it has entered our palaces; it has cut off the children from the streets, the young men from the squares.
22
The dead bodies of men lie like dung on the open field, like sheaves behind the reaper, with no one to gather them.”
23
Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches,
24
but let the one who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who shows steadfast love, justice, and righteousness on the earth; for in these things I delight, declares the LORD.”
25
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh:
26
Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and all who cut the corners of their hair, those who dwell in the wilderness; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.”
