In our world, leaders are often portrayed as people who are respected, honored, and even served. But Jesus showed a very different example. On the last night before His crucifixion, He did something that surprised His disciples. John 13:14–15 records, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet; for I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.”
Washing feet in those days was the work of a servant, not a teacher or a leader. But Jesus deliberately took that position. He wanted to show that true leadership is not about position, but about humility to serve.
Jesus’ action was not only symbolic, but also a very practical message: if even the Lord was willing to serve in such a humble way, then we have no reason to refuse to serve others, even in simple things. Humility is not weakness, but the strength of a true leader.
Leadership in the world’s view is often measured by how many people submit to us. But the leadership Jesus taught is measured by how much we are willing to humble ourselves for others. A true leader is not one who demands honor, but one who is willing to sacrifice.
In daily life, each of us is a leader in some sphere—whether as a parent, teacher, senior coworker, or even a friend whom others listen to. The question is, do we lead in Jesus’ way? Are we ready to wash others’ feet—that is, to humble ourselves, strengthen others, and serve even when no one sees?
Serving quietly is often more powerful in its impact than a thousand words. Jesus did not only teach about love; He showed it through action. That is what made His leadership different and everlasting.
Today, let us learn this: being a leader is not about sitting on top, but about kneeling below. The world may see that as lowly, but in God’s eyes that is glory.
Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us the meaning of true leadership. Teach me not to seek honor, but to be willing to serve. Teach me to lead with humility, starting from small things, just as You were willing to wash Your disciples’ feet. Amen.
