Many people think faith is the same as positive feelings, as if only when we feel calm, peaceful, or full of confidence is faith truly real. But the Bible shows that faith goes far beyond simply feeling comfortable in the heart. Faith is not about mood, but about the decision to trust even when our hearts are shaken.
Hebrews 11:1 affirms, โNow faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.โ This means faith stands firm even when circumstances give no reason to be optimistic. Feelings can rise and fall, but faith chooses to keep believing.
Jesus Himself often rebuked His disciples when they were afraid, even though He was with them. For Jesus, faith was not about how much peace they felt, but how much they trusted Him, whatever the situation. True faith is tested not when everything feels fine, but when the storm comes crashing in.
Sometimes we think, โIf I truly have faith, I wonโt feel worried.โ But the truth is, we can still feel anxious and still choose to trust. Faith does not deny reality; it refuses to be ruled by fear.
Imagine Noah when he built the ark. He did not wait until his feelings were calm or until everyone agreed. He obeyed because he believed Godโs word, even though by logic and feeling it must have been very difficult. Or Abraham, who was asked to offer Isaac. His heart must have been shattered, yet he still trusted the God who had promised.
In our lives, faith is expressed in real steps: praying even before seeing an answer, giving even before having abundance, forgiving even while the heart still hurts, serving even while tired. Faith is not a momentary emotion, but consistent faithfulness.
If your feelings are shaky today, do not let them dictate your faith. Hold on to Godโs promises, because faith is not measured by how strong our optimism feels, but by the steadfastness to keep walking with God.
Father, teach me to have a steadfast faith, not only when my feelings are good. Strengthen me to trust You even when I am afraid, even when I am tired, even when I do not understand. Let my life be lived by faith, not by feelings alone. Amen.
