There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; that man was blameless and upright; he feared God and turned away from evil.

He had seven sons and three daughters.
3
He possessed seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.
4
His sons used to hold feasts in each one’s house in turn, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Whenever the days of feasting had run their course, Job would send for them and consecrate them; and early in the morning Job would rise and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all, for he said, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.

The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming about on the earth and walking back and forth on it.”
8
The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is none like him on the earth, a man so blameless and upright, who fears God and turns away from evil.”

Then Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing?
10
Have You not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
11
But stretch out Your hand now and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
12
Then the LORD said to Satan, “Very well, all that he has is in your power; only do not stretch out your hand against his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

Now on a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their oldest brother,
14
a messenger came to Job and said, “While the oxen were plowing and the female donkeys were feeding beside them,
15
the Sabeans came and attacked and took them away, and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
16
While he was still speaking, another came and said, “Fire from heaven fell and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
17
While he was still speaking, another came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, then raided the camels and took them away, and struck the servants with the edge of the sword. I alone have escaped, so that I may tell this to my lord.”

While he was still speaking, another came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,

when suddenly a great wind came from across the wilderness; it struck the house at its four corners, and it fell upon the young people, so that they died. I alone have escaped, so that I may tell this to my lord.”
20
Then Job arose, tore his robe, shaved his head, and fell to the ground and worshiped,
21
saying, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!”

In all this Job did not sin, nor did he charge God with wrongdoing.

Job 1 opens the remarkable story of faith, suffering, and faithfulness. Job is introduced as a man who is deeply devout, wealthy, and respected. - The Sabeans attacked and stole the oxen and donkeys, and his servants were killed

- The Chaldeans raided and stole the camels
- A great wind struck the house where his children were feasting — all his children died
