“All these things I have spoken to you, so that you may not be offended and turn away from Me.

You will be put out of the synagogues; indeed, the time is coming when whoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God.

They will do these things because they have not known the Father nor Me.

But I have spoken these things to you, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.”

I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

But when He comes, the Spirit of Truth, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you things that are to come.

He will glorify Me, because He will declare to you what He receives from Me.

All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He will declare to you what He receives from Me.”

“A little while, and you will see Me no more; and again a little while, and you will see Me.”

Hearing this, some of His disciples said to one another, “What does He mean when He says to us, ‘A little while, and you will see Me no more; and again a little while, and you will see Me’? And, ‘I am going to the Father’?”

So they said, “What does He mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what He is saying.”

Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, and He said to them, “Are you discussing with one another what I said just now: ‘A little while, and you will see Me no more; and again a little while, and you will see Me’?”

I tell you the truth: you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

A woman has sorrow when she is giving birth, but after she has delivered the child, she no longer remembers her anguish, because of the joy that a human being has been born into the world.

So also you now are filled with sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take that joy away from you.

And on that day you will ask Me nothing. I tell you the truth: whatever you ask the Father, He will give it to you in My name.

Until now you have asked for nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be full.

I have spoken all these things to you in figures of speech. The time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will plainly tell you about the Father.

On that day you will pray in My name. And I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf,

for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.

I came from the Father and have come into the world; again I leave the world and go to the Father.”

His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and are using no figure of speech.

Now we know that You know all things and do not need anyone to question You. By this we believe that You came from God.”

📖 John 16 – The Promise of the Comforter and Victory over the World

🧾 Summary of John 16

In John 16, Jesus continues His final conversation with the disciples before the crucifixion. He warns them about the suffering that is coming, promises the coming of the Holy Spirit, and comforts them with the promise of His victory over the world.

1. Warning about Persecution (verses 1–4)

Jesus said:

“I have spoken all these things to you so that you may not be offended and fall away.” (verse 1)

The disciples will be put out of the synagogue, and some will even be killed because they think they are serving God.
Jesus reminds them that He says this before it happens, so that they may remain steadfast when that time comes.

2. The Coming of the Holy Spirit (verses 5–15)

Jesus declared that His departure was for their good, because only then could the Holy Spirit come.

“It is better for you if I go away.” (verse 7)

- Glorify Jesus by declaring what is His.
The Holy Spirit does not speak on His own, but speaks what He hears from the Father and the Son.

3. Sorrow That Will Become Joy (verses 16–24)

Jesus said:

“In a little while you will not see Me, and in a little while you will see Me again.” (verse 16)

The disciples were confused, but Jesus explained that they would grieve while the world rejoices, yet their sorrow would turn into joy—like a woman giving birth.
Jesus’ promise:

“No one can take that joy from you.” (verse 22)

Jesus emphasized the importance of praying in His name and that the Father Himself loves them.

4. Victory over the World (verses 25–33)

Jesus began speaking more plainly.
The disciples declared their faith, but Jesus warned that they would be scattered and leave Him.

“Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.” (verse 32)

Jesus closed with a very strengthening statement:

“In the world you will suffer persecution, but take heart, I have overcome the world.” (verse 33)
