After Moses the servant of the LORD had died, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying:

“My servant Moses is dead; now therefore arise, cross over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land that I am giving to them, to the children of Israel.
3
Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses.
4
From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the setting of the sun, shall be your territory.
5
No one will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you nor forsake you.
6
Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.
7
Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to act according to all the law that My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may prosper wherever you go.
8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then your way will be prosperous, and then you will have good success.
9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying:

“Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, Prepare your provisions, for within three days you will cross this Jordan, to go in and possess the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess.”

And to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua spoke, saying:

“Remember the word that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, The LORD your God has given you rest and has given you this land;
14
your wives, your little ones, and your livestock may remain in the land that Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but you shall cross over before your brothers, all the mighty men of valor, armed, and you shall help them,
15
until the LORD gives your brothers rest, as he has given you, and they also take possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them. Then you may return to your own land and take possession of the land that Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave you beyond the Jordan, toward the sunrise.”
16
Then they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go;
17
just as we listened to Moses, so we will listen to you. Only, may the LORD your God be with you, as he was with Moses.
18
Whoever opposes your command and does not listen to your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and steadfast in heart!”
