After a long time, when the LORD had given rest to Israel on every side from all their enemies, and when Joshua was old and advanced in years,

Joshua summoned all Israel, their elders, their heads, their judges, and their officers, and said to them: “I am old and very advanced in years.

You have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for the LORD your God is He who has fought for you.
4
Remember, I have allotted by lot to your tribes these remaining nations as an inheritance, as well as all the nations that I cut off, from the Jordan River to the Great Sea in the west.

And the LORD your God will drive them out and thrust them from before you, so that you may possess their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
6
Be very strong, then, to keep and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, so that you do not turn aside to the right or to the left,

and so that you do not associate with these nations that remain among you, or mention the name of their gods, or swear by them, or serve them, or bow down to them.
8
But you shall cling to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day.
9
Has not the LORD driven out great and strong nations before you? And as for you, no one has been able to stand against you to this day.
10
One man of you puts a thousand to flight, for the LORD your God is He who fights for you, as He promised you.
11
So take great care for your lives, to love the LORD your God.
12
For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations that remain among you, and intermarry with them and associate with them, and they with you,
13
know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. But they shall become a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
14
And now, I am about to go the way of all the earth. So take it to heart and with all your soul, that not one thing of all the good things the LORD your God promised you has failed. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.
15
But just as all the good things that the LORD your God promised you have come upon you, so the LORD will bring upon you all the evil things until He has destroyed you from this good land that the LORD your God has given you,

when you transgress the covenant that the LORD your God commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land that He has given you.”

In Joshua 23, Joshua, now old, calls the leaders of Israel to give his final message before his death. He reminds them of the LORD’s faithfulness, warns them about the danger of compromise with the nations, and urges them to remain attached to the LORD and keep His law.
📌 1. The LORD Has Already Acted, Do Not Forget! (verses 1–5)
- Joshua reminds them: the LORD Himself fought for them, and they have seen all His works.

“Be strong to keep all that is written in the book of the law of Moses…” (verse 6)

- Joshua commands Israel to remain obedient to the Word and not mingle with foreign nations or worship their gods.
- Israel must cling to the LORD — in the original language, this means to be tightly bound together (like the bond of marriage).

- One Israelite can defeat a thousand enemies because the LORD is the one who fights.

- Joshua said:
“Not one of the Lord’s promises has failed…” (verse 14)
“But if you break His covenant… you will perish from this land.” (verse 16)
- This message is very clear: blessing and curse depend on Israel’s faithfulness.
