1
Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,

and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you.
3
You have not left your brothers during this long time, even to this day, but have kept the command of the LORD your God faithfully.
4
But now the LORD your God has given rest to your brothers, as He promised them. Therefore return to your tents, to your possession, which Moses, the servant of the LORD, gave you beyond the Jordan.
5
Only be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Then Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.
7
To the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given their portion in Bashan; but to the other half Joshua had given their portion among their brothers on the west side of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their tents, after blessing them,
8
he said to them, “Return to your tents with great riches and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and with very many garments. Share the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.”
9
So the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned and departed from the Israelites, out of Shiloh in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to their own land, which they possessed according to the command of the LORD through Moses.
10
When they came to the region of the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, an altar of great size.
11
Then the Israelites heard it said, “Look, the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar facing the land of Canaan, at the region of the Jordan, on the side belonging to the Israelites.”

When the Israelites heard of it, the whole assembly of the Israelites gathered at Shiloh to go up against them in battle.
13
Then the Israelites sent to the descendants of Reuben, to the descendants of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest,
14
and with him ten leaders, one leader for each ancestral house of the tribes of Israel. Each of them was the head of his ancestral house among the clans of Israel.
15
When they came to the descendants of Reuben, to the descendants of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead, they spoke to them, saying:

“Thus says the whole congregation of the LORD: What is this unfaithful act that you have committed against the God of Israel, turning away today from the LORD and building for yourselves an altar, and so rebelling against the LORD today?
17
Was the guilt of Peor not enough for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, and which brought a plague upon the congregation of the LORD,
18
that you must now turn away from following the LORD? If you rebel against the LORD today, then tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
19
But if the land you possess is unclean, then cross over into the land that belongs to the LORD, where the tabernacle of the LORD stands, and settle among us. Only do not rebel against the LORD and do not rebel against us by building for yourselves an altar besides the altar of the LORD our God.
20
Did not Achan son of Zerah act unfaithfully in taking the devoted things, and wrath came upon the whole congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone for his sin.”
21
Then the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the heads of the clans of Israel:
22
“The God of gods, the LORD, the God of gods, the LORD, he knows, and let Israel know too! If this has been done in rebellion or in unfaithfulness against the LORD, do not spare us today.
23
If we have built an altar to turn away from the LORD, to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, and to make peace offerings on it, may the LORD himself call us to account.
24
But in truth we have done this out of concern. For we said, ‘In time to come your children may say to our children, “What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?”
25
Has not the LORD made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, O descendants of Reuben and descendants of Gad? You have no share in the LORD.’ So your children might make our children stop fearing the LORD.
26
Therefore we said, ‘Let us build this altar for ourselves!’ Not for burnt offerings and not for sacrifices,
27
but that the altar may be a witness between us and you, and between our descendants after us, that we may continue to serve the LORD before Him with our burnt offerings, our sacrifices, and our peace offerings. So it would not be possible for your children in days to come to say to our children: You have no share in the LORD.
28
And we said: If in days to come they should say this to us and to our descendants, then we will say: Look at the replica of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made. It is not for burnt offerings and not for sacrifices, but that altar is a witness between us and you.
29
Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD, and to turn away from the LORD today by setting up an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, an altar that is not the altar of the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle!”
30
When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the congregation and the heads of the clans of Israel who were with him heard the words spoken by the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the descendants of Manasseh, they were pleased.
31
Then Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of Reuben, the descendants of Gad, and the descendants of Manasseh: “Now we know that the LORD is among us, because you have not been unfaithful to the LORD. In this way you have delivered the Israelites from the LORD’s judgment.”
32
After that, Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders left the descendants of Reuben and the descendants of Gad in the land of Gilead, and returned to Canaan to the Israelites, and the report was brought to them.
33
The matter was pleasing in the sight of the Israelites, so that the Israelites praised God and no longer spoke of going up to fight against them to destroy the land inhabited by the descendants of Reuben and the descendants of Gad.
34
And the descendants of Reuben and the descendants of Gad named the altar: Witness, for it is a witness between us that the LORD is God.
