Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid, and do not be discouraged; take all the army with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land.
2
And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king; only its spoil and its livestock you may take as plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city.”
3
So Joshua and all the army prepared to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand mighty men of valor and sent them away by night
4
and commanded them, saying, “See, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind it; do not go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.
5
Then I and all the people who are with me will approach the city; and when they come out against us, as at the first, we will flee before them.
6
They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are fleeing before us as at the first.’ So we will flee before them.
7
Then you shall rise from the ambush and take possession of the city, for the LORD your God will give it into your hand.
8
And when you have taken the city, you shall set it on fire. According to the word of the LORD you shall do all this; see, I have commanded you.”
9
So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the place of ambush and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai. But Joshua spent that night among the people.
10
Joshua rose early in the morning and mustered the people, and he and the elders of Israel went up before the people to Ai.
11
All the army that was with him went up and drew near, and they came opposite the city and camped on the north side of Ai, with the valley between them and Ai.
12
He had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
13
So the people were arranged: the whole army on the north side of the city, with the rear guard on the west side of the city. That night Joshua went into the valley.
14
And when the king of Ai saw this, he and all his people, the men of the city, hurried out early to fight against Israel on the slope opposite the plain; but he did not know that there was an ambush behind the city.
15
Joshua and all Israel acted as though they were beaten back by them, and fled toward the wilderness.
16
So all the people who were in the city were summoned to pursue Israel. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn farther and farther away from the city.
17
Not a man was left in Ai and Bethel who did not go out after Israel. They left the city open, because they pursued Israel.
18
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Stretch out the spear that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give the city into your hand.” So Joshua stretched out the spear in his hand toward the city.
19
When he stretched out his hand, the men who had been lying in ambush quickly rose from their place, ran into the city, captured it, and immediately set the city on fire.
20
When the men of Ai turned and looked back, the smoke of the city was rising up to heaven; they had no chance to flee anywhere, for the people who had been fleeing to the wilderness turned back against their pursuers.
21
When Joshua and all Israel saw that the men in ambush had captured the city and that the smoke of the city was rising up, they turned back and struck down the men of Ai.
22
At the same time the other Israelites came out from the city and attacked the men of Ai, so that they were caught in the midst of Israel, these from one side and those from the other; the men of Ai were struck down, and not one of them was left to escape or get away.
23
But the king of Ai was taken alive and brought before Joshua.
24
As soon as Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the open field where Israel had pursued them, and all of them had fallen by the edge of the sword until the last one, all Israel returned to Ai and struck the city with the sword.
25
The total number of those who fell that day, both men and women, was twelve thousand, all the people of Ai.
26
And Joshua did not draw back his hand that was holding out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
27
Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as plunder, according to the word of the LORD, which He had commanded Joshua.
28
Joshua burned Ai and made it a heap of ruins forever, a desolation to this day.
29
And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening. At sunset Joshua commanded that the body be taken down from the tree and thrown at the city gate, and a great heap of stones was raised over it, which remains to this day.
30
At that time Joshua built an altar to the LORD, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal,
31
as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the children of Israel, according to what is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool had been used. On it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD and sacrificed peace offerings.
32
And there, on those stones, Joshua wrote a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
33
All Israel, their elders, officers, and judges stood on either side of the ark, facing the Levitical priests, the bearers of the ark of the covenant of the LORD, both the foreigner and the native-born, half of them toward Mount Gerizim and half of them toward Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had formerly commanded, when the people were to bless Israel.

Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the curses, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read before the whole assembly of Israel, and the women and the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.
🛡️🔥📜 Summary of Joshua 8 – Victory at Ai and Renewal of the Covenant
After the matter of Achan was dealt with (Joshua 7), the Lord was again with Israel. In Joshua 8, Israel defeated the city of Ai with the military strategy given by the Lord. This chapter also records the renewal of the covenant on Mount Ebal and Gerizim, according to Moses’ command (Deuteronomy 27–28).
📌 1. A New Command and God’s Strategy (verses 1–9)
- The Lord said to Joshua:
“Do not fear and do not be dismayed…” (verse 1)
“I have given Ai into your hand; this time you may take the plunder and the livestock.”
- Joshua arranged a strategy: a decoy and an ambush.
The main force lured the enemy out.
The ambush force (30,000 men) hid behind the city of Ai.
🎯 After repentance, the Lord gives a different strategy, and victory belongs to the obedient people.
📌 2. The City of Ai Is Defeated (verses 10–29)
- When the king of Ai saw Israel coming, he went out to attack.
- At that time, the ambush force entered and burned the city of Ai.
- The main force turned back to attack, and Israel surrounded the enemy from two sides.
- The king of Ai was captured and hanged, then buried under a heap of stones.
🎯 True victory comes when we walk according to God’s guidance, not by our own strength.
📌 3. Renewal of the Covenant at Mount Ebal (verses 30–35)
- Joshua built an altar of uncut stones, according to the law of Moses.
- The Law was written on the stones.
- All the people — men, women, children, even foreigners — listened to the reading of the law from Mount Ebal and Gerizim.
- Blessed are those who obey, cursed are those who break it.
🎯 After victory, God’s people must return to the word and renew their obedience.
