Then all the Israelites went up, and the people gathered together as one from Dan to Beersheba, and also from the land of Gilead, before the LORD at Mizpah.

The leaders of all the people took their stand, from all the tribes of Israel, in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand men on foot, armed with swords.
3
And the Benjaminites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah. The Israelites said, “Tell us how this wicked deed happened.”
4
Then the Levite, the husband of the woman who had been killed, answered, “I came with my concubine to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin, to spend the night there.
5
But the men of Gibeah came against me and surrounded the house by night, intending to kill me. Instead, they violated my concubine, and she died.
6
So I took my concubine’s body, cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel’s inheritance, because they have committed lewdness and outrage in Israel.
7
Now then, all of you Israelites, are here. Give your counsel and your advice here.”
8
Then all the people rose up together, saying, “Not one of us will go to his tent, and not one of us will return to his house.
9
But this is what we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by lot!
10
We will take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to provide supplies for the army, so that when they come, they may repay Gibeah of Benjamin for all the outrage they have done in Israel.”

So all the men of Israel gathered against the city, united as one.

Then the tribes of Israel sent men throughout the whole tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has taken place among you?
13
Now therefore, hand over the men, the worthless fellows in Gibeah, so that we may put them to death and remove evil from Israel.” But the Benjaminites would not listen to the voice of their brothers, the Israelites.

Instead, the Benjaminites from the cities gathered at Gibeah to go out and fight against the Israelites.
15
On that day the Benjaminites from the cities were counted: twenty-six thousand men armed with swords, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered seven hundred chosen men.
16
Among all this army there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed; every one of them could sling a stone and not miss, even to a hair’s breadth.
17
The men of Israel were also numbered; besides Benjamin, there were four hundred thousand men armed with swords; all of them were warriors.
18
Then the men of Israel arose and went up to Bethel. There they asked God, “Who among us shall go up first to fight against the sons of Benjamin?” The LORD answered, “Judah shall go first.”
19
So the men of Israel rose early and camped against Gibeah all around.

Then the men of Israel went out to battle against the tribe of Benjamin; the men of Israel drew up their battle line against them near Gibeah.
21
And the sons of Benjamin came out from Gibeah and struck down to the ground twenty-two thousand men of Israel that day.
22
But the army of the men of Israel gathered all its strength, and again drew up its battle line in the place where they had drawn it up before.
23
Then the men of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening; afterward they asked the LORD, “Shall we go up again to fight against our brothers, the sons of Benjamin?” The LORD answered, “Go up against them.”
24
But when the men of Israel came near the sons of Benjamin on the second day,
25
on that second day Benjamin came out from Gibeah against them and struck down eighteen thousand men of Israel to the ground; all of them were men armed with swords.
26
Then all the men of Israel, that is, the whole people, went up to Bethel; there they sat and wept before the LORD, and fasted that day until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.
27
And the men of Israel inquired of the LORD — at that time the ark of the covenant of God was there,
28
and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, was ministering as priest before God at that time — saying, “Shall we go out once more to battle against the sons of Benjamin, our brother, or shall we stop?” The LORD answered, “Go up, for tomorrow I will give them into your hand.”

Then Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah.
30
On the third day the men of Israel went up against the sons of Benjamin and drew up their battle line against Gibeah as before.
31
So the sons of Benjamin went out against the army; they were drawn away from the city, and as before they began to strike down the army on the highways, one leading to Bethel and the other to Gibeah through the open country, so that some were killed, about thirty men of Israel.
32
Then the Benjaminites said, “They are being beaten down before us as at the first.” But the men of Israel had already agreed, “Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.”
33
So the men of Israel rose from their place and drew up in battle array at Baal-tamar, while the ambush of Israel burst forth from its place, from the open ground near Gibeah,
34
and came against Gibeah, ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel. The battle was fierce, but the Benjaminites did not know that disaster was coming upon them.
35
The LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the men of Israel destroyed twenty-five thousand one hundred men of Benjamin, all of them armed with the sword.
36
So the Benjaminites saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel had given ground before Benjamin, because they trusted the ambush they had set against Gibeah.
37
Then the ambush rushed quickly against Gibeah. They advanced and struck the whole city with the edge of the sword.
38
Now the men of Israel had agreed with the ambush that they should raise a great cloud of smoke from the city.
39
When the men of Israel withdrew in the battle, Benjamin began to attack the men of Israel, and about thirty men were killed, for they thought, “Surely they are being utterly defeated by us, as in the former battle.”
40
But at that time the smoke began to rise from the city like a pillar of smoke. The Benjaminites turned back, and behold, the whole city was going up in flames, with the fire rising to the sky.
41
Then the men of Israel turned back again. So the men of Benjamin were terrified, for they saw that disaster was coming upon them.
42
Therefore they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle could not be avoided by them; and those from the cities destroyed them in their midst.
43
They surrounded the tribe of Benjamin, pursued them without ceasing, and pressed them hard in front of Gibeah, toward the east.
44
Eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell, all of them valiant men.
45
The rest turned and fled into the wilderness, to the rock of Rimmon. But on the highways there was a further cutting down among them: five thousand men; they were pursued as far as Gidom, and two thousand of them were struck down.
46
So the men of Benjamin who fell that day were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword, all of them valiant men.
47
But six hundred men turned and fled into the wilderness, to the rock of Rimmon, and they stayed at the rock of Rimmon four months.
48
Then the men of Israel turned back against the sons of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, both men and animals and all that was found there. Also all the cities that were found there they set on fire.
⚔️🧍♂️🔥 Summary of Judges 20 – Civil War Against Benjamin
After the outrage at Gibeah (Judges 19), all the people of Israel gathered in anger. Yet this chapter reveals that though their purpose was right (to uphold justice), their methods were chaotic, and their relationship with God was not pure.
📌 1. Israel United in Demanding Justice (verses 1–11)
- All the tribes of Israel gathered at Mizpah (except Benjamin), 400,000 armed soldiers.
- The Levite told the story of his concubine who was raped and died, but without mentioning that he himself handed her over — manipulation of the facts.
- Israel demanded that the tribe of Benjamin hand over the wicked men of Gibeah, to be put to death.
- The tribe of Benjamin refused, and instead assembled 26,000 soldiers against all Israel.
🎯 When loyalty to a tribe is placed above truth, justice will be distorted.
📌 2. The First and Second Battles – Israel Defeated (verses 12–25)
- First day: Israel sought guidance from God at Bethel. God told Judah to go up.
➤ Israel was defeated, 22,000 men fell. - Second day: They wept and asked God again. God told them to go up again.
➤ Israel was defeated again, 18,000 men fell.
🎯 God does not automatically bless, even when the cause seems right. An unclean heart and haste can bring defeat.
📌 3. The Third Battle – Israel Wins (verses 26–48)
- Israel fasted, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings at Bethel.
- They asked the LORD again, now with a more humble heart:
“Shall we go up again, or shall we stop?”
- The LORD answered:
“Go up; tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
- On the third day, Israel trapped the Benjamite force with a strategy of a decoy and an attack from behind.
- 25,100 Benjamites were killed. Only 600 men escaped to the wilderness.
🎯 True victory comes not only because of strategy, but because the hearts of the people return to the LORD.
