Now Jerubbaal—that is, Gideon—rose early in the morning with all the people who were with him, and they camped beside the spring of Harod; and the camp of Midian was north of them, near the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

The LORD said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hand, lest Israel boast against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’
3
Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’” Then twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.
4
But the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there. The one of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you; and whoever of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.”

So Gideon brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to him, “Everyone who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who kneels down to drink.”

And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water.
7
Then the LORD said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and I will give Midian into your hand; but let all the other people go, each to his own place.”
8
So they took provisions and trumpets from the people; and he sent all the men of Israel away, each to his tent, but he kept the three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley.

That same night the LORD said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand.
10
But if you are afraid to go down, go down with Pura your servant to the camp;
11
and you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Pura his servant to the outposts of the armed men in the camp.
12
Now Midian and Amalek and all the people of the east lay in the valley, as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as the sand on the seashore in abundance.
13
When Gideon came there, behold, a man was telling his dream to his companion, saying, “I dreamed: behold, a loaf of barley bread rolled into the camp of Midian; when it came to the tent, it struck the tent so that it fell, and turned it upside down, and the tent collapsed.”

Then his companion answered, “This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite; God has given Midian and all this camp into his hand.”

When Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. Then he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the LORD has given the camp of Midian into your hand.”

Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put trumpets into the hands of them all, and empty jars, with torches inside the jars.
17
And he said to them, “Look at me, and do as I do. When I come to the edge of the camp, you shall do as I do.
18
When I and all who are with me blow the trumpet, then you also shall blow the trumpets all around the whole camp, and cry out, ‘For the LORD and for Gideon!’”

So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when the guards had just been posted. Then they blew the trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands.

Then the three companies blew the trumpets together and broke the jars, holding the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands to blow them, and they cried out, “A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!”

Meanwhile they stood each in his place around the camp, but the whole army was thrown into confusion, shouting and fleeing.

When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow throughout the camp, and the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel-meholah, near Tabbath.

Then the men of Israel were summoned from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued Midian.

Gideon also sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian, and seize the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were summoned, and they seized the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.

They succeeded in capturing the two kings of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. Oreb was killed at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb was killed at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites, and then they brought the head of Oreb and the head of Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan River.

- The way they drank water. → only 300 lapped water with their hands (alert); the rest went home.
🎯 The Lord cares more about the quality of faith than the quantity of the army.

- The Lord told Gideon to sneak into the enemy camp.
- Gideon heard a Midianite soldier dreaming about a barley loaf that overturned the camp of Midian.

- Gideon fell down and worshiped the Lord and returned to his troops with renewed courage.
