Ah, how the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in His anger! He has cast down the glory of Israel from heaven to earth. He has not remembered His footstool in the day of His wrath.

Without pity the Lord has swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob. In His fury He has torn down the strongholds of the daughter of Judah. He has brought them to the ground and profaned the kingdom and its rulers.

In blazing anger He has cut off every horn of Israel; He has drawn back His right hand before the enemy came near. He has burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, consuming all around.

He has bent His bow like an enemy, with His right hand set like an adversary; He has slain all that was pleasing to the eye in the tent of the daughter of Zion. He has poured out His wrath like fire.

The Lord has become like an enemy; He has swallowed up Israel, swallowed up all her palaces, destroyed her strongholds, and multiplied mourning and lamentation for the daughter of Judah.

He has laid waste His dwelling like a garden, destroyed His place of meeting. The LORD has caused appointed feast and sabbath to be forgotten in Zion, and in the indignation of His wrath has spurned king and priest.

The Lord has rejected His altar, abandoned His sanctuary, and given into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces. They raised a shout in the house of the LORD as on a day of appointed feast.

The LORD determined to tear down the wall of the daughter of Zion. He stretched out the measuring line; He did not withhold His hand from destroying it. He made the rampart and the wall mourn; they languish together.

Her gates have sunk into the ground; the LORD has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her rulers are among the nations; there is no instruction from the LORD, even her prophets receive no vision from Him.

The elders of the daughter of Zion sit on the ground in silence; they have thrown dust on their heads and put on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem bow their heads to the ground.

My eyes are spent with tears; my heart is in turmoil; my liver is poured out on the ground because of the ruin of the daughter of my people, because children and infants faint in the streets of the city.

They say to their mothers, Where is bread and wine? as they faint like the wounded in the streets of the city, as their life ebbs away in their mothers’ arms.

What can I say for you, to what can I compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your ruin is vast as the sea; who can heal you?

Your prophets have seen for you false and empty visions. They have not exposed your guilt, to restore you again. They have spoken for you false and misleading oracles.

All who pass by clap their hands at you. They hiss and shake their heads over the daughter of Jerusalem: Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?

Against you all your enemies open their mouths wide. They hiss and gnash their teeth: We have swallowed her up! they say. Surely this is the day we have longed for; we have found it, we have seen it!

The LORD has done what he planned; he has fulfilled his word, which he commanded long ago. He has torn down without pity; he has made the enemy rejoice over you; he has exalted the horn of your adversaries.

Cry out to the Lord with a loud voice, O daughter of Zion; let tears run down like a river day and night. Give yourself no rest; let your eyes have no relief.

Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches; pour out your heart like water before the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the life of your children, who faint from hunger at the head of every street.

See, O LORD, and look: to whom have you done this? Should women eat their own children, the children they have nursed? Should priest and prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

Young and old lie on the ground in the streets; my virgins and my young men have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of your anger; you have slaughtered them without pity.

As on a day of assembly, you summoned my terrors from every side. In the day of the LORD’s anger none escaped or survived. Those whom I nursed and reared my enemy destroyed.

Lamentations 2 describes God’s blazing anger against Jerusalem and Judah because of their sins.
