He has driven me away and brought me into darkness, without any light.

Surely against me He turns His hand again and again all the day.

He has made my flesh and my skin waste away; He has broken my bones.

He has built against me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.

He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead.

He has walled me in so that I cannot go out; He has bound me with heavy chains.

Even when I cry and call for help, He shuts out my prayer.

So I said, “My glory has perished, and my hope from the LORD.”

Remember my affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and the poison.

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end,

they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.”

The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul that seeks Him.

It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.

Who speaks, and it comes to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it?

Why should a living person complain? Let each one complain over his own sin!

Let us search and examine our ways, and turn back to the LORD.

Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven:

We have transgressed and rebelled; You have not forgiven.

You have covered Yourself with anger and pursued us, killing us without pity.

You have covered Yourself with a cloud, so that prayer cannot pass through.

Lamentations 3 is the emotional center of the book of Lamentations. In the midst of the destruction of Jerusalem and personal suffering, the writer (most likely Jeremiah) gives voice to his deepest sorrow — yet also to his greatest hope. He describes God as an enemy who strikes and breaks his life, but in that darkness he finds a strong ray of hope: “The LORD’s steadfast love never ends, new every morning!” (verses 22–23).
