You may have heard the terms “left-brained” or “right-brained” people. One is said to be logical, analytical, and fond of numbers. The other is creative, intuitive, and full of imagination. But is it true that humans are only dominant on one side? And if so, did God design us that way, or rather to be balanced?
Behind our complex brains, there is a very careful design. And interestingly, both science and the Bible give clues that balance is part of the Creator’s design.
Scientific Facts: The Brain Is Not Split in Two
Anatomically, the human brain is indeed divided into two hemispheres: the left brain and the right brain. The left brain is known for processing logic, language, mathematics, and sequence. Meanwhile, the right brain handles creativity, art, and intuition.
However, modern neuroscience studies show that all humans actually use both hemispheres of the brain at the same time. No one is “only” left-brained or right-brained. Brain activity happens across both sides, depending on the task being done. Even activities such as reading poetry or solving logic problems still involve connections between the brain’s sides.
So, God designed our brains not to be strong on only one side, but to complement one another. This shows how extraordinary His design is: a brain that not only thinks, but also feels.
Faith and Balance: The Image and Likeness of God
In Genesis 1:27 it is written:
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
The word “image” here is not only about physical form, but also includes spiritual, moral, and intellectual aspects. We reflect God, who is perfect and balanced in wisdom and love. God is just, but also full of mercy. Firm, yet patient.
So it is fitting that humans were also created with two different sides that strengthen one another. When we think logically, we reflect His wisdom. When we create and imagine, we reflect His beauty.
Developing Both Is Part of Faith
God did not give us brains to use only halfway. We are called to love Him with all our mind and all our heart.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
This means that the mind (the logical and rational aspect) and the heart (intuition and empathy) are part of worship. Reading the Bible with understanding and meditating on it deeply is a real example of the left and right brain working together in our relationship with God.
Conclusion: God Designed Balance, Not One-Sided Excellence
You may prefer counting over drawing, or vice versa. But do not limit yourself to the labels “left-brained” or “right-brained.” God designed our brains with both logic and imagination, understanding and feeling. When both are used together, we reflect His image even more.
So do not hesitate to train both. When you think critically, God is pleased. When you create, God smiles too. Because He created us not half, but whole.
