Why Are People Afraid of the Dark? God’s Light and Promise

Since childhood, many of us have been afraid of the dark. A room without light can make the heart race and the mind run toward what is unreasonable. Even as adults, the discomfort of being in the dark often still remains. But why are people actually afraid of the dark? Is it only a biological instinct, or is there something deeper?

Interestingly, both science and the Bible speak a great deal about light and darkness, and both reinforce that human beings were indeed created to live in the light.

The Scientific Side: Uncertainty Keeps the Brain Alert

In neuroscience, the fear of darkness is called nyctophobia, and it often stems from the brain’s inability to predict danger. When it is dark, the sense of sight, which is the human’s dominant sense, becomes limited. The brain then enters a state of alert, triggering the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.

People feel unsafe in the dark because they lose control over their surroundings. We do not know what is behind the shadows, so the brain begins to imagine the worst possibilities.

From an evolutionary perspective, this makes sense. Darkness hides danger, and humans survived by avoiding it. But beneath this biological side, there is a deeper spiritual side.

Light Is God’s Language

From the beginning of creation, God revealed Himself through light.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3)

God did not begin the world with thunder or an earthquake. He began with light. This is not only physical light, but also a symbol of presence, hope, and direction.

Jesus also said:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Darkness often symbolizes confusion, sin, and separation from God. No wonder our souls feel uneasy in darkness, because spiritually, we were never created to remain there.

Fear Can Become an Invitation to Trust

When we feel afraid in the dark, whether physically or emotionally, it can become an invitation to return to the light. Not only the light of a lamp, but the guiding light of God.

Psalm 27:1 says:

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

This verse is not merely comfort, but also a declaration of faith. When we cannot see ahead, when life feels dark and uncertain, God remains the light that never goes out.

Closing: Become a Reflector of His Light

We may not be able to avoid night or dark rooms, but we can bring light into them. Whether literal light or the light of love, hope, and faith.

And like the moon reflects the sun’s light, we are called to reflect God’s light in a world that is often dark.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14)

So when darkness comes, do not panic. Remember that light is always stronger than darkness, and we know the Source of that Light Himself.
