At one time Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He had finished praying, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

Jesus answered them, “When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be Your name;
Your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread

and forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us; and do not lead us into temptation.”

Then He said to them, “If one of you goes at midnight to his friend’s house and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him;’

will the one inside answer, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is already shut, and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything’?

I tell you, even if he will not get up and give it to him because he is his friend, yet because of his boldness he will rise and give him whatever he needs.

So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who seeks finds, and to everyone who knocks the door will be opened.

Which father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?

Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven! He will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.”

At one time Jesus cast out a mute demon from a man. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke. And the crowd was amazed.

But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons.”

Others were testing Him and asked Him for a sign from heaven.

But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to ruin, and a household divided against itself falls.

If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.

So if I cast out demons by the power of Beelzebul, by whose power do your followers cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

But if I cast out demons by the power of God, then the kingdom of God has truly come upon you.

When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.

But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted, and divides the spoil.

Whoever is not with Me is against Me, and whoever does not gather with Me scatters.”

“When an unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, I will return to my house from which I came out.

And when it comes, it finds the house swept clean and put in order.

Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person becomes worse than the first.”

While Jesus was still speaking, a woman from the crowd lifted up her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the mother who bore You and the breasts that nursed You.”

But He said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”

When the crowds were gathering around Him, Jesus began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

At the judgment, the queen of the South will rise up with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed, something greater than Solomon is here!

At the judgment, the people of Nineveh will rise up with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed, something greater than Jonah is here!”

“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see its light.

Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is good, your whole body is full of light; but if your eye is evil, your body is full of darkness.

Therefore take heed, lest the light that is in you become darkness.

If your whole body is full of light, with no part dark, then it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp gives you light with its shining.”

When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited Him to dine at his house. So He went in and reclined at table.

The Pharisee saw this and was astonished, because Jesus had not washed before the meal.

But the Lord said to him: “You Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are full of robbery and wickedness.

You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside also make the inside?

But give what is within as alms, and indeed all things will be clean for you.

But woe to you, Pharisees, for you tithe mint and rue and every kind of herb, but you neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

Woe to you, Pharisees, for you love the chief seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

Woe to you, for you are like unmarked graves, and the people who walk over them do not know it.”

One of the scribes answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things, You insult us also.”

But He said: “Woe to you also, scribes, for you load people with burdens too heavy to bear, but you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one finger.

Woe to you, for you build the tombs of the prophets, but your fathers killed them.

48
So you testify that you approve the deeds of your fathers, for they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.

Therefore the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,

so that the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,

from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the house of God. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.

Woe to you, scribes, for you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and those who were trying to enter you hindered.”

And after Jesus departed from that place, the scribes and the Pharisees kept watching Him closely and bombarding Him with all kinds of questions.

For this reason they tried to trap Him, so that they might catch Him on something He said.
