Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling one another. Then Jesus began to teach, first to His disciples, saying, “Beware of the leaven, that is, the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

There is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, and nothing hidden that will not be known.

Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed from the housetops.

I say to you, My friends, do not fear those who can kill the body and after that can do nothing more.

I will show you whom you should fear. Fear Him who, after killing, has authority to cast into hell. Truly I say to you, fear Him!

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God,

even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear, for you are worth more than many sparrows.

I say to you: Everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will also confess before the angels of God.

But whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

When they bring you before synagogues or rulers and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should say in your defense.

But Jesus said to him, “Man, who appointed Me as judge or arbitrator over you?”

Then He said to them, “Watch out and be on guard against all greed, for even when a man has an abundance of possessions, his life does not depend on his wealth.”

He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, since I have nowhere to store my crops?’

Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.’

Then I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry!’

But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul will be required of you, and the things you have prepared—whose will they be?’

So it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about your body, what you will put on.

For life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.

Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. How much more are you worth than the birds!

Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his span of life?

If then you are not able to do even the least thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Consider the lilies, how they neither spin nor weave; yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.

If then God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is here and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith!

Sell your possessions and give alms. Make for yourselves purses that do not grow old, a treasure in heaven that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.

And be like men who wait for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him at once.

Blessed are those servants whom the master finds watching when he comes. Truly I say to you, he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them.

And if he comes in the middle of the night, or at daybreak, and finds them doing so, blessed are they.

But know this: if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Peter said, “Lord, are You speaking this parable for us, or for everyone?”

And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise steward, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time?

Blessed is that servant whom his master finds doing so when he comes.

Truly I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.

But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male servants and the female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk,

then the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him, and at an hour he does not know, and will put him to death and assign him a place with the unfaithful.

And that servant who knew his master’s will, but did not prepare or do what his master wanted, will receive many blows.

But the one who did not know, and did things deserving of blows, will receive few blows. Everyone to whom much was given, from him much will be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him even more will be demanded.”

“I came to cast fire upon the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!

Do you think that I came to bring peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but division.

For from now on there will be division in one house, five against two and two against five.

They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Jesus also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming,’ and so it happens.

And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘It will be scorching hot,’ and so it happens.

You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why then can you not interpret this time?

And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?

For when you go with your adversary before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him while you are on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.
