This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

As it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah:
“Behold, I send My messenger before You, who will prepare Your way before You;
3
a voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
Prepare the way for the Lord, make His paths straight,”
4
so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness and proclaimed: “Repent and be baptized, and God will forgive your sins.”
5
Then people came to him from all the region of Judea and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and confessing their sins, they were baptized in the Jordan River.

John wore a garment of camel hair and a leather belt, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

This is what he proclaimed: “After me will come One who is more powerful than I; I am not worthy even to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals.
8
I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in the land of Galilee, and He was baptized in the Jordan River by John.

As He came up out of the water, He saw the heavens torn open, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him.
11
Then a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
12
Immediately after that the Spirit led Him into the wilderness.
13
In the wilderness He remained forty days, being tempted by the Devil. He was there among the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.
14
After John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God,
15
saying: “The time is fulfilled; the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel!”

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, Simon’s brother. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
17
Jesus said to them: “Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
18
At once they left their nets and followed Him.
19
And after Jesus went on a little farther, He saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, mending their nets in the boat.
20
Jesus immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.
21
They came to Capernaum. When the Sabbath began, Jesus immediately entered the synagogue and taught.
22
They were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not like the scribes.
23
At that time there was in that synagogue a man possessed by an evil spirit. The man cried out:
24
“What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are: the Holy One of God.”
25
But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
26
And the unclean spirit convulsed the man, and with a loud cry came out of him.
27
They were all amazed, so that they discussed it among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching. He speaks with authority. Even the unclean spirits He commands, and they obey Him.”
28
And the report about Him spread quickly everywhere throughout all Galilee.

As soon as they had come out of the synagogue, Jesus, with James and John, went to the house of Simon and Andrew.
30
Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever. And they immediately told Him about her.
31
He came to her, and taking her by the hand He raised her up, and the fever left her. Then the woman served them.
32
When evening came, after the sun had set, they brought to Jesus all who were sick and those who were possessed by demons.
33
And the whole city gathered at the door.
34
He healed many who were afflicted with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not permit the demons to speak, because they knew Him.
35
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He rose and went out. He went to a solitary place and prayed there.
36
But Simon and those with him followed after Him;
37
and when they found Him, they said, “Everyone is seeking You.”
38
He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may preach the gospel there also; for that is why I have come.”
39
And He went throughout all Galilee, preaching the gospel in their synagogues and casting out demons.
40
A man with leprosy came to Jesus, and kneeling before Him he begged Him, saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
41
Moved with compassion, He stretched out His hand, touched the man, and said to him, “I am willing; be made clean.”
42
At once the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
43
And He sent the man away at once with a stern warning:
44
“See that you say nothing about this to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing the offering commanded by Moses, as a testimony to them.”

But the man went away and began to proclaim the matter and spread it everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer enter the town openly. He stayed outside in lonely places; yet people kept coming to Him from every direction.

The Gospel of Mark begins directly with the ministry of Jesus, without recording His genealogy or birth, as do the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Mark’s focus is Jesus as a servant actively ministering.

Jesus Casts Out Evil Spirits and Heals (verses 21–34):
Jesus taught in the synagogue with authority and drove out an evil spirit.
He healed Simon’s mother-in-law and many who were sick.
The people came to Him in great crowds.
Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place (verses 35–39):
Jesus rose early in the morning and prayed in a quiet place.
When the crowd searched for Him, He said, “Let us go to another place… so that I may preach the gospel there also.”
Jesus Heals a Leper (verses 40–45):
A man with leprosy came and begged to be healed.
Jesus was moved with compassion and healed him.
He asked that it not be made known, but the man spread it everywhere.
