Then, after some days, when Jesus came again to Capernaum, it was reported that He was in the house.

And many gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. While He was speaking the word to them,

some people came bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men.

But they could not bring him near to Him because of the crowd; so they uncovered the roof above Him, and when they had opened it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.

When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “My son, your sins are forgiven!”

But there were also some scribes sitting there, and they were thinking in their hearts:

“Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins except God alone?”

But Jesus immediately knew in His spirit that they were thinking this way within themselves, and He said to them, “Why do you think these things in your hearts?

Which is easier, to say to this paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your mat, and walk’?

But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — He said to the paralytic —:

“I say to you, rise, take up your bed, and go to your house!”

And the man rose, immediately took up his bed, and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”

After this Jesus went out again to the lakeshore, and all the crowd came to Him, and He taught them.

Then as He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow Me!” So Levi rose and followed Him.

Then, as Jesus was dining at that man’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were dining together with Him and His disciples, for there were many who followed Him.

When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

When Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Now it happened that when the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting, people came and said to Jesus, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not?”

Jesus answered them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as the bridegroom is with them, they cannot fast.

But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.

No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse.

And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins will be lost. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”

One Sabbath, Jesus was walking through the grainfields, and as they walked, His disciples began to pick heads of grain.

So the Pharisees said to Him, “Look! Why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

He answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and those with him were in need and hungry,

how he entered the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?”

Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath;

so the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
