When reading the Gospel of Matthew, we find something interesting at the beginning. Matthew records Jesus’ genealogy in quite a detailed way, from Abraham to the birth of the Messiah (Matthew 1:1-17). At first glance, this genealogy looks like an ordinary list of names, but if we look closely, there are many people with dark pasts in it.
In that list are Rahab, a prostitute from Jericho (Joshua 2:1). There is Ruth, a Moabite woman whose background carried a troubled history. There is also David, the great king of Israel, who fell into the sin of adultery with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:2-5). Even Solomon, the child from that relationship, is recorded in the lineage of Jesus. It is as if Matthew wants to emphasize that Jesus came not because of a noble lineage, but rather was born through those who had flawed pasts.
This is good news for us. Jesus never rejects someone simply because of their past. He does not see our worth based on a record of mistakes, but on the love and plan He has for the future. The apostle Paul wrote, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Often the devil tries to bind us with guilt or shame over the past. But the cross of Christ has broken that chain. We do not need to live in fear of yesterday’s mistakes. The Lord looks at us with eyes of loving forgiveness. What matters is how we respond to that love today, by repenting and walking with Him.
Perhaps there are people who still remember our past. They may judge us, or look down on the change in us. Yet remember, God’s forgiveness is far stronger than human judgment. When Jesus chose Matthew, a tax collector who was looked down on, He did not care about the world’s labels, but saw a heart willing to be changed.
So, do not let the past become an obstacle to the future God has prepared. Whatever has happened, Jesus says: “Your sins are forgiven” (Mark 2:5). The old may have been stained, but with Christ, our lives begin again on a new page.
Lord Jesus, thank You because You do not reject me even though my past is full of weakness. Teach me to receive Your forgiveness and live as a new creation. Help me no longer be bound to the past, but to step boldly into Your plan. Amen.
