This question often comes up in everyday life, whether in church, at work, or in government. As believers, we are taught to respect and obey leaders. Yet confusion arises: must that obedience be absolute? What if a leader is wrong or acts unjustly? Let us look at the answer from a biblical perspective.
1. The Biblical Principle of Obedience to Leaders
The Bible emphasizes the importance of obeying leaders. Romans 13:1 says, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God…” This affirms that a leader’s authority is permitted by God to maintain order and justice.
Likewise, in the church, Hebrews 13:17 reminds us, “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls…” This verse affirms that spiritual leaders are called to guide the congregation.
2. Obedience Does Not Mean Excusing Wrongdoing
However, obedience is not blind obedience. When a leader’s command conflicts with God’s Word, believers are called to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29 records Peter and the apostles’ reply: “We must obey God rather than men.”
