Nehemiah 7 – Protective Measures and the Register of the Returned Exiles

1
After the wall had been rebuilt, I set up the doors. Then the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites were appointed.

2
I put Hanani, my brother, in charge of Jerusalem, and Hananiah, the commander of the fortress, because he was a trustworthy man and feared God more than many others.

3
I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem must not be opened until the sun is hot. And while the guards are still on duty, the doors are to be shut and barred. Appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his watchpost and in front of his house.”

4
Now the city was wide and large, but the people in it were few, and the houses had not yet been built.

5
Then my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the officials, and the people, so that they might be enrolled by genealogy. And I found the register of those who had first returned. In it I found written:

6
These are the people of the province of Judah who came back from the captivity, the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.

7
They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.

59
the descendants of Shephatiah, the descendants of Hattil, the descendants of Pochereth-Hazzebaim, the descendants of Amon.

60
All the temple servants and the descendants of Solomon’s servants were three hundred and ninety-two.

61
These are the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not state whether their families and their ancestry belonged to Israel:

62
the descendants of Delaiah, the descendants of Tobiah, the descendants of Nekoda: six hundred and forty-two;

63
and from among the priests: the descendants of Habaiah, the descendants of Hakkoz, the descendants of Barzillai. Barzillai had taken a wife from the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their family name.

64
They searched for their names in the genealogical records, but they were not found there; therefore they were declared unclean for the priesthood.

65
And the governor ordered them not to eat of the most holy offerings until a priest should arise with Urim and Thummim.

66
The whole assembly together was forty-two thousand three hundred sixty,

67
besides their male and female servants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty-seven. And they had two hundred forty-five male and female singers.

72
And what the rest of the people gave was: twenty thousand darics of gold, two thousand minas of silver, and sixty-seven priestly garments.

73
So the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel lived in their towns.

📜🏗️👥 Summary of Nehemiah 7 – The Reordering of the People and the Strengthening of the Nation’s Identity

Nehemiah 7 continues after the wall of Jerusalem has been completed. Once the wall stood firm, Nehemiah’s focus shifted from physical building to building the community and spiritual identity. He appointed faithful leaders, arranged the guarding of the city, and recorded the genealogy of those who first returned from exile — reaffirming the identity of God’s chosen people. This chapter emphasizes that without people, a building is only stone — and God’s people must live in order, faithfulness, and consecration.

📌 1. The City Guarded and Led by Faithful People (verses 1–4)
➡️ After the wall was finished and the gates were set in place, the city guards, singers, and Levites were appointed
➡️ Nehemiah appointed two important men:

  • Hanani — his own brother
  • Hananiah — commander of the fortress, a man who feared God more than many others
➡️ He established the rules for guarding:
  • The gates were opened only after the sun was high
  • Guards were stationed at their posts and at their houses

🎯 The building of God’s city must be guarded by people who are faithful and fear God, not only by those who are clever or strong.

📌 2. Recording Again Those Who Returned from the Exile (verses 5–69)
➡️ God put it into Nehemiah’s heart to record the genealogy of the people, so that all might be orderly and structured
➡️ He found the list of the descendants of the Israelites who first returned from exile (as in Ezra 2):

  • Priests
  • Levites
  • Singers, gatekeepers, temple servants
  • Foreigners who joined Israel
➡️ Total: 42,360 people, not including servants and singers

🎯 The identity of God’s people is not in numbers or wealth, but in faithfulness to the divine calling and spiritual heritage.

📌 3. Purifying the People through Genealogical Examination (verses 61–65)
➡️ Some people could not show their genealogy, especially among the priests
➡️ They were forbidden to serve as priests until confirmation came through Urim and Thummim

🎯 Spiritual service is not to be done carelessly — it must come from a clear calling and approval from God.

📌 4. Offerings for the House of God (verses 70–73)
➡️ The heads of the families and the people gave freewill offerings:

  • 20,000 darics of gold
  • 2,200 minas of silver
  • 67 priestly garments
➡️ All this was for supporting the House of God and worship

🎯 Those who have been established in their identity as God’s people will give joyfully and willingly for His work.

📖 Main Teaching

  • The task of spiritual leaders is not only to build physically, but also to build a community that is orderly and holy
  • Leaders who fear God are the key to a nation’s stability
  • Recordkeeping and spiritual identity are important for preserving the unity and purpose of the people
  • Service must be based on a legitimate and divine calling
  • The one who experiences spiritual restoration will give willingly for the work of the Lord

  • Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)
