(8-2) Then all the people gathered together as one in the square before the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, the law that the LORD had given to Israel.

(8-3) So on the first day of the seventh month, the priest Ezra brought the Book of the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding.

(8-4) He read from it in the square before the Water Gate, from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and women and all who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the reading of the Book of the Law.

(8-5) Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform made for the occasion. At his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left stood Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

(8-6) Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people. When he opened it, all the people stood up.

(8-7) Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

(8-8) Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, instructed the people in the Law while the people remained in their places.

(8-9) The portions from the book, that is, the Law of God, were read clearly, with explanations, so that the reading was understood.

(8-10) Then Nehemiah, who was the governor, and the priest Ezra, the scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to them all, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep!” For all the people wept when they heard the words of the Law.

(8-11) Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat rich food and drink sweet drinks, and send portions to those who have nothing prepared, for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength!”

(8-12) The Levites also quieted all the people, saying, “Be still! This day is holy. Do not be grieved!”

(8-13) So all the people went away to eat and drink, to share food and celebrate with great joy, because they understood the words that had been made known to them.

(8-14) On the second day the heads of the fathers’ houses of all the people, together with the priests and the Levites, gathered to Ezra the scribe, to study the words of the law.

(8-15) And they found written in the law, which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month,

(8-16) and that they should proclaim and publish in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hill country, and bring olive branches, branches of wild olive, myrtle branches, palm branches, and branches of leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written.”

(8-17) So the people went out and brought them, and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courtyards, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square of the Water Gate, and in the square of the Gate of Ephraim.

(8-18) The whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in them. For from the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing.

(8-19) Also day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the book of the law of God. They kept the feast seven days, and on the eighth day there was a solemn assembly, according to the ordinance.

Nehemiah 8 is a spiritual turning point for the people of Israel. ➡️ The next day, the heads of families again studied the law of the Lord and found that the people were to celebrate the Feast of Booths
➡️ They set up booths from branches of trees on the roofs, in the courtyards, and in the courts of the house of God
➡️ This was done in a way that had not happened since the days of Joshua
➡️ Each day for 7 days Ezra read from the Book of the Law, and they rejoiced greatly
