Numbers 3 – The Levites

This is the lineage of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai.

These are the names of Aaron’s sons: the firstborn Nadab, then Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

These are the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who had been ordained to serve as priests.

But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD. They had no children. So while Aaron their father was still alive, Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.

The LORD spoke to Moses:

“Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest, so that they may serve him.

They are to perform duties for Aaron and for the whole community of Israel before the Tent of Meeting, and thus carry out the service of the sanctuary.

They are to take care of all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, and perform duties for the Israelites, and thus carry out the service of the sanctuary.

9
You are to give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are to be given to him wholly from among the Israelites.

10
But you are to appoint Aaron and his sons to carry out their priestly duties; any outsider who comes near is to be put to death.”

The LORD spoke to Moses:

“Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of every firstborn, the first to open the womb, so that the Levites shall be Mine,

for all the firstborn are Mine. On the day I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I set apart for Myself all the firstborn in Israel, both human and animal; they are all Mine. I am the LORD.”

The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai:

“Register the sons of Levi by their clans and families; every male one month old and above you shall register.”

So Moses registered them according to the word of the LORD, as he was commanded.

These are the sons of Levi by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

These are the names of the sons of Gershon and their clans: Libni and Shimei.

The sons of Kohath and their clans were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

The sons of Merari and their clans were Mahli and Mushi.
These are the clans of the Levites according to their families.

From Gershon came the clans of Libni and Shimei; these were the clans of Gershon.

The number registered of all the males one month old and above was seven thousand five hundred.

The clans of the Gershonites camped behind the tabernacle on the west side.

The leader of the Gershonite fathers’ house was Eliasaph son of Lael.

What the sons of Gershon were to keep in the Tent of Meeting was the tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the curtain for the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

the hangings of the court, the curtain for the entrance of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, with all the work connected with them.

The clan of the Kohathites consisted of the families of Amram, the families of Izhar, the families of Hebron, and the families of Uzziel; these were the families of the Kohathites.

The number recorded of them, when all the males a month old and upward were counted, was eight thousand six hundred, those who were in charge of the holy things.

The families of the sons of Kohath camped on the south side of the tabernacle.

The leader of the Kohathite fathers’ house and their families was Elizaphan son of Uzziel.

What they were to keep was the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary used in the service, also the curtain, with all the work connected with them.

The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, who had oversight of those who kept the holy things.

The clan of the Merarites consisted of the families of Mahli and the families of Mushi; these were the families of Merari.

The number recorded of them, when all the males a month old and upward were counted, was six thousand two hundred.

The leader of the fathers’ house of the Merarites and their families was Zuriel son of Abihail. They camped on the north side of the tabernacle.

What was assigned to the sons of Merari to keep was the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its bases, all its furnishings, with all the work connected with them,

also the pillars of the court all around, their bases, pegs, and cords.

Those who camped in front of the tabernacle on the east, in front of the Tent of Meeting, were Moses and Aaron and his sons, who carried out the duty of keeping the sanctuary for the Israelites; but the outsider who came near was to be put to death.

The total of the Levites, according to the command of the LORD, recorded by Moses and Aaron by their families, all the males a month old and upward, was twenty-two thousand.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Register all the firstborn males of Israel a month old and upward, and count their number,

and take the Levites for Me — I am the LORD — in place of all the firstborn among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn among the livestock of the Israelites.”

So Moses registered all the firstborn among the Israelites, as the LORD had commanded him.

All the firstborn males who were recorded by name in that census, those who were a month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.

Then the LORD spoke to Moses:

“Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites instead of their livestock, so that the Levites shall be Mine; I am the LORD.

As the redemption price for the two hundred and seventy-three firstborn of Israel who are in excess of the number of the Levites,

you shall take five shekels for each man; you shall take it according to the holy shekel—this shekel is twenty gerahs in weight—.

48
Give the silver to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for those who are in excess.”

So Moses took the redemption money for those who were in excess of those redeemed by the Levites;

from the firstborn of the Israelites he took the silver, one thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels, weighed according to the holy shekel,

and Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.

👨‍⚖️🛐🔁 Summary of Numbers 3 – The Appointment of the Levites in Place of the Firstborn

Numbers 3 discusses the assignment of the tribe of Levi as special servants in the Tabernacle, replacing the firstborn sons of all Israel.
The Lord set apart Levi as His own to serve, guard, and carry the Tabernacle, and to be a spiritual mediator between God and the people.

📌 1. The Descendants of Aaron (verses 1–4)

• Aaron’s sons: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
• Nadab and Abihu died because they offered strange fire before the Lord (Leviticus 10).
• Eleazar and Ithamar continued the priestly service under Aaron.

🎯 Only Aaron’s sons were allowed to be priests, while the whole tribe of Levi assisted in the service of the Tabernacle.

📌 2. The Tribe of Levi Set Apart for the Lord (verses 5–13)

• The Lord commanded that the tribe of Levi replace the firstborn of Israel in serving at the Tabernacle.
• All firstborn males belonged to the Lord from the time the firstborn of Egypt were struck down (Exodus 13:2).
• The Lord replaced the firstborn with the tribe of Levi—they became the Lord’s in a special way.

📌 3. Division of the Duties of the Tribe of Levi (verses 14–39)

The tribe of Levi was divided into three clans, each descended from the sons of Levi:

• Aaron and his sons (the priests) camped on the east and guarded the main entrance to the Tent.
• Total males of the tribe of Levi aged 1 month and above: 22,000

📌 4. Redemption of the Firstborn (verses 40–51)

• Number of the firstborn of Israel (besides the tribe of Levi): 22,273
• Number of the Levites: 22,000 → 273 firstborn remaining
• The Lord appointed that the 273 extra firstborn were to be redeemed at 5 shekels per person
• Redemption money: 1,365 shekels, given to Aaron and the priests

📖 Every firstborn outside the tribe of Levi must be redeemed, because they belong to the Lord.

📖 Main Teaching

1. The Lord has rights over the firstborn—whether children, the harvest, or our lives.
2. Service before the Lord is a special calling and must be carried out with reverence and order.
3. The Lord is a God of order—He establishes the structure of service and responsibility in detail.
4. The tribe of Levi symbolizes the special calling of people set apart to serve the Lord wholeheartedly.
5. Every believer should realize that his life has been “redeemed” and belongs to the Lord.

✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)

• Levi took the place of the firstborn, but Jesus Christ is the true Firstborn who redeems us all (Colossians 1:15).
• We are all now priests and servants of God (1 Peter 2:9) — called to serve, keep holiness, and live in holiness.
• The redemption in this chapter shows that our salvation is not free either—there is a price that was paid.
• Service to the Lord is not merely a duty, but worship and devotion.
