Numbers 4 – Duties of the Kohathites

The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:

“Take a census of the sons of Kohath by their clans, as a separate group among the sons of Levi.

Count those from thirty years old and upward, even to fifty years old, all who are subject to duty, so that they may do the work of the Tent of Meeting.

This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the Tent of Meeting: the most holy things.

When the camp is to set out, Aaron and his sons shall go in and take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it.

On it they shall put a covering of dolphin skin, and over that they shall spread a cloth all of blue; then they shall insert its poles.

7
They shall also spread a cloth of blue over the table of the bread of the Presence, and on it they shall place the plates, the cups, the bowls, and the jars for the drink offering; the bread of the Presence shall remain on it.

Over all these they shall spread a scarlet cloth, and cover it with a covering of dolphin skin; then they shall insert its poles.

Then they shall take a cloth of blue and cover the lampstand for the light, with its lamps, its tongs, its snuffers, and all its oil vessels used in attending it.

And they shall put it with all its utensils on a covering of dolphin skin, and place it on the carrying frame.

Over the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue and cover it with a covering of dolphin skin; then they shall insert its poles.

Then they shall take all the utensils used for the service in the sanctuary, put them in a cloth of blue, cover them with a covering of dolphin skin, and place them on the carrying frame.

They shall remove the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth over it,

and on it place all its utensils used in attending to it: the fire pans, the forks, the shovels, the basins, all the utensils of the altar; and over it they shall spread a covering of dolphin skin, then they shall insert its poles.

When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy things and all the utensils of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set out, only then may the sons of Kohath come in to carry them; but they must not touch the holy things, lest they die. These are the things in the Tent of Meeting that the sons of Kohath are to carry.”

But Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, was in charge of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering, and the anointing oil; he was in charge of the whole Tent of Meeting and all that was in it, namely the holy things and its furnishings.”

The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron:

“See to it that the clan of Kohath and its families are not cut off from among the Levites.

This is what you must do for them, so that they may live and not die when they approach the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in and assign each man to his duty and to what he is to carry.

But the Kohathites must not go in to look at the holy things, even for a moment, lest they die.”

The LORD spoke to Moses:

“Take a census also of the sons of Gershon by their clans and their families.

Record those from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who is obligated to service, so that they may perform the work of service in the Tent of Meeting.

This is the duty of the families of Gershon in their service and in carrying the loads:

they are to carry the curtains of the Tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting with its covering and the covering of dolphin skins that is over it, the screen for the entrance of the Tent of Meeting,

the hangings of the court, and the screen for the entrance of the gate of the court that is around the Tabernacle and the altar, with their cords and all the equipment for their service; and they shall do all that is required concerning them.

All the service of the sons of Gershon shall be done according to the command of Aaron and his sons, namely all their carrying duties and their service; you shall appoint them in charge of all that they are to carry.

This is the duty of the families of the sons of Gershon in the Tent of Meeting. They shall work under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest.

As for the sons of Merari, you shall record them by their families and by their clans.

Record those from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who is obligated to service, so that they may perform the work of service in the Tent of Meeting.

This is what they are to carry for all their service in the Tent of Meeting: the frames of the Tabernacle, its crossbars, its pillars, and its bases,

the pillars of the surrounding court, their bases, pegs, and cords, and all their equipment; all these are included in their duty. You shall assign by name the items they are to carry.

That was the duty of the clans of the sons of Merari, the whole work of their service in the Tent of Meeting, to be carried out under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest.”

So Moses and Aaron, with the leaders of Israel, numbered the sons of Kohath by their clans and by their families,

that is, those from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who was liable for duty in connection with the work of service in the Tent of Meeting.

And the number of those registered by their clans was two thousand seven hundred fifty.

37
These were the ones registered from the clans of Kohath, all who performed the work of service in the Tent of Meeting, those whom Moses and Aaron registered according to the command of the LORD through Moses.

The sons of Gershon were registered by their clans and by their families,

that is, those from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who was liable for duty in connection with the work of service in the Tent of Meeting,

so those registered by their clans and by their families numbered two thousand six hundred thirty.

This was the number of the clans of the sons of Gershon, all who performed the work of service in the Tent of Meeting, those whom Moses and Aaron registered according to the command of the LORD.

The sons of Merari were registered by their clans and by their families,

43
that is, those from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who was liable for duty in connection with the work of service in the Tent of Meeting,

so those registered by their clans numbered three thousand two hundred.

This was the number of the clans of the sons of Merari, those whom Moses and Aaron registered according to the command of the LORD through Moses.

All the Levites whom Moses and Aaron, with the leaders of Israel, registered by their clans and by their families,

that is, those from thirty years old and upward to fifty years old, everyone who was required to do the work of service in the Tent of Meeting and the work of carrying burdens,

so those registered numbered eight thousand five hundred eighty.

According to the command of the LORD through Moses, each man was assigned his responsibility for what he was to do and carry. Thus they were registered, as the LORD commanded Moses.

🎒⛺🕊️ Summary of Numbers 4 – The Duty of Carrying the Sacred Furnishings

Numbers 4 continues the setting apart of the tribe of Levi, especially the division of duties for carrying the holy things from the Tabernacle during Israel’s journey in the wilderness.

The main focus of this chapter is on the Levites aged 30–50, those who were physically active for the service of carrying.

📌 1. The Duty of the Clan of Kohath (verses 1–20)

• The clan of Kohath was assigned to carry the most holy things, including:

• • The Ark of the Covenant

  • The table of the bread of the Presence

  • The golden lampstand

  • The altar of incense

  • The holy utensils

  • The separating curtain

• Before they were carried, Aaron and his sons had to wrap these things in special cloths.
• The members of Kohath were not to touch the holy things directly, not even to look at them—they could die.

📖 Holy service requires complete obedience to God’s commands.

📌 2. The Duties of the Clan of Gershon (verses 21–28)

• Tasked with carrying:

• • The curtains of the tent

  • The covering of the Tabernacle

  • The courtyard curtains

  • The cords

• Under the supervision of Ithamar, Aaron’s son.

📌 3. The Duties of the Clan of Merari (verses 29–33)

• Tasked with carrying:

• • The boards of the Tabernacle

  • The crossbars

  • The posts and their bases

  • The pegs and cords

• Also supervised by Ithamar.

🎯 Each clan has specific burdens and responsibilities, according to the capacity and placement given by God.

📌 4. The Number of Levites Eligible for Service (verses 34–49)

Age counted: 30–50 years, men able to work and carry.

📖 Each person was assigned a task according to what the LORD commanded Moses.

📖 Main Lessons

1. The service of God is serious and holy. Even inanimate objects such as the ark and the lampstand must be handled in the proper way.
2. God appoints different roles and duties for each person. Not everyone bears the same thing, but everyone is important.
3. There is an active period of service (30–50 years), emphasizing physical readiness, responsibility, and spiritual maturity.
4. Obedience to God’s command can save life—deviation can bring death.
5. Practical spiritual tasks are still noble service if done for God and with reverence.

✨ Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)

• In Christ, we are all servants of God and are called to serve the body of Christ according to different gifts (1 Corinthians 12).
• We must honor the holiness of ministry and calling, both in great matters and in small ones.
• Jesus is the true Ark, and now the presence of the Lord dwells in His people—our ministry too becomes holy.
• Serving does not have to mean being a high priest; even lifting the tent of the Lord is worship, if it is done in faith and obedience.
