Numbers 30 – Vows of Women

1
Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel, saying: “This is what the LORD has commanded.

2
When a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath, binding himself by a pledge, he must not break his word; he must do exactly as he has spoken.

3
But if a woman vows a vow to the LORD and binds herself by a pledge in her father’s house, while she is still a girl,

4
and her father hears her vow and the pledge by which she binds herself, and her father says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she binds herself shall stand also.

5
But if her father forbids her when he hears of it, then none of her vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand; and the LORD will forgive the woman, because her father has forbidden her.

6
But if she is married, and she is still under obligation because of a vow or an impulsive pledge by which she has bound herself,

7
and her husband hears of it, but says nothing to her when he hears it, then her vows shall stand, and the pledge by which she has bound herself shall stand also.

8
But if her husband, when he hears of it, forbids her, then he has annulled the vow that was her obligation and the impulsive pledge by which she bound herself; and the LORD will forgive her.

9
As for the vow of a widow or of a divorced woman, whatever binds her shall stand for her.

10
If a woman in her husband’s house vows or binds herself by a pledge with an oath,

11
and her husband hears of it, but says nothing to her and does not forbid her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge by which she binds herself shall stand also.

12
But if her husband clearly annuls them when he hears of it, then whatever comes from her lips, whether vow or pledge, shall not stand; her husband has annulled them, and the LORD will forgive her.

13
Every vow and every oath-pledge by which the woman afflicts herself with fasting may be confirmed by her husband, or her husband may annul it.

14
But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, then he has confirmed all her vows or all her binding pledges; he has confirmed them, because he said nothing to her when he heard them.

15
But if he nullified it some time after he heard of it, then he shall bear the guilt of his wife.”

16
These are the statutes that the LORD commanded Moses, between a husband and his wife, and between a father and his daughter while she was still a girl in her father’s house.

✋📜🔗 Summary of Numbers 30 – Vows, Oaths, and Spiritual Responsibility

Numbers 30 contains God’s law concerning vows and oaths, that is, special promises spoken by a person to God. This chapter emphasizes that our words before God are not a small matter, and highlights the importance of faithfulness, integrity, and spiritual authority in the family.

📌 1. A Man’s Personal Promise (verses 1–2)

  • If a man makes a vow or oath to the LORD, then:

“He must not break it, but he must do according to all that comes out of his mouth.”

🎯 God requires accuracy of speech and integrity, especially when a person commits himself to Him.

📌 2. A Woman’s Promise While Still Living in Her Father’s House (verses 3–5)

  • If a woman vows to the LORD:
    • And if her father lets her stand, the vow remains in force.

    • But if her father refuses on the day he hears, her vow is nullified.

🎯 This emphasizes the father’s authority as head of the household in spiritual matters and the responsibility to protect the child.

📌 3. A Woman’s Promise When Married (verses 6–8)

  • If a wife vows:
    • And if her husband supports her, then the vow remains in force.

    • If his husband cancels it when he hears, then the vow is void and his wife is not guilty.

🎯 This shows that the marriage bond affects spiritual responsibility, and that the husband is the spiritual guardian of his wife.

📌 4. The Vow of a Widow or a Woman Left Alone (verse 9)

  • If a widow or a divorced woman makes a vow, all her words stand without any other authority to cancel them.

🎯 Full personal responsibility is given when there is no spiritual head in the household.

📌 5. Confirmation of the Law of Vows (verses 10–16)

  • A husband may cancel or confirm his wife’s vow, but if he remains silent, he is considered to have agreed to it.
  • If he cancels it after some time, then the husband bears his guilt.

🎯 Decisions in spiritual authority must be made wisely, promptly, and responsibly.

📖 Main Teaching

  1. Our words before God are sacred and binding.
  2. Integrity and spiritual commitment are not merely intention — but real action.
  3. God values the structure of authority in the family: father and husband as spiritual guardians.
  4. Women are not regarded as weak — but protected from hasty vows that would bring harm.
  5. Spiritual responsibility is personal, but also layered within community and family.

Spiritual Meaning (New Testament)

  • In the NT, Jesus taught:

“If yes, say yes; if no, say no. Anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” (Matthew 5:37)

  • Meaning: our lives should be so honest and consistent that no oath is needed to convince others.
  • A true vow is also exemplified by Paul (Acts 18:18) and Hannah (1 Samuel 1), showing that a promise to God can become a deep means of worship — as long as it is accompanied by responsibility.
