Often we think that drawing near to God must start with a big change. We feel we have to be “more spiritual first,” memorize more verses, serve more, or be holier before daring to come to Him. But the truth is: God does not wait for you to be perfect, He waits for you to take a step. One step. That’s all.
In James 4:8 it is written, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” Notice the order. The first step is not from God, but from us. And the good news is, when we take a step, God immediately welcomes us.
However, often that step feels heavy because there are many barriers in our hearts. Shame over sin, disappointment because prayers have not been answered, or even a sense of distance due to a long time without fellowship. But remember, God does not reject a broken heart. In Psalm 51:19 it says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
So, what exactly does that “one step” look like?
It could be as simple as opening the Bible for five minutes this morning. It could also be praying, even if only one honest sentence from the heart. Maybe also by coming to worship even though the heart is still doubtful. God sees our small efforts as big steps.
Remember the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15? He had just made the decision to return to his father’s house, and verse 20 says, “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran to his son…” God is the Father who runs when He sees us take one step back.
Don’t wait for perfect conditions. No need to wait for your heart to feel “spiritual.” Start now. Take one small step: a short prayer, simple praise, honest confession. And watch how God will welcome you with open arms.
Because in the end, spiritual life is not built in great leaps, but in small consistent steps toward God. And today could be the beginning of that beautiful journey.
