Introduction
For some people, a syringe is a great enemy. Even before the needle touches the skin, some already close their eyes or grip a hand tightly. The question is, why did God create pain? If He is full of love, why were we not made immune to pain, including when receiving an injection? Interestingly, both science and the Bible give a harmonious explanation.
Science Behind Pain
Scientifically, pain is a body defense mechanism. When a needle pierces the skin, pain receptors (nociceptors) in that area send signals through the nerves to the spinal cord and the brain. The brain then processes them as “pain” to let us know that there is potential tissue damage.
Without pain, the body would not know when it is injured. There is a rare condition called Congenital Insensitivity to Pain, in which sufferers cannot feel pain at all. At first glance it may sound pleasant, but in fact they are vulnerable to serious injuries without realizing it, and it can even endanger their lives.
In other words, pain is a natural alarm that helps us protect ourselves. In the context of injections, pain is only a brief side effect of a process that actually brings benefit, such as preventing disease or healing infection.
The Bible’s View of Pain
The Bible never says that life in this world is free from pain. In fact, since humanity fell into sin, suffering has been part of reality (Genesis 3:16-19). Yet God can use pain for good purposes.
Hebrews 12:11 says, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
This verse shows that not all pain is in vain, often there is learning and refining behind it.
Seeing Injections from a Spiritual Perspective
If we look at injections only from the side of the pain, we will tend to avoid them. But if we see the benefit vaccines that protect the body, medicine that restores our health we begin to understand that small pain can bring great good.
Likewise in life, God sometimes allows us to experience “spiritual injections”: rebuke, correction, or tests of faith that are uncomfortable, yet bring healing to the soul.
Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
Conclusion
Science explains that pain during an injection is part of the body’s protection system, while the Bible teaches that God can use pain for a greater good. So even though we do not like syringes, we can remember that God often allows discomfort in order to bring healing and life.
