Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God every time I remember you.

And every time I pray for you all, I always pray with joy.

I give thanks to my God because of your fellowship in the Good News from the first day until now.

Of this I am fully convinced, that he who began a good work among you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Indeed, it is right for me to think this way about you all, because you are in my heart, since you all share in the grace given to me, both in my imprisonment and in my defense and confirmation of the Good News.

For God is my witness how I long for you all with the tender affection of Christ Jesus.

And this is my prayer, that your love may abound more and more in true knowledge and in all discernment,

so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the Good News,

so that it has become clear to the whole palace guard and to all the others that I am in chains for Christ.

And most of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence because of my imprisonment, and now dare to speak the word of God more boldly and without fear.

Some proclaim Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of good will.

These proclaim Christ out of love, because they know that I am here for the defense of the Good News,

but the others do so from selfish ambition and with insincere motives, thinking that in this way they are adding to my hardship in prison.

But what does it matter? In every way, whether from false motives or from sincerity, Christ is proclaimed. In this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,

for I know that the outcome of all this will be my salvation through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

For my earnest expectation and hope is that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that, as always, so now also, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

Because for me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

But if I am to live on in this world, that means fruitful labor for me. So which I should choose, I do not know.

I am hard pressed from both sides: I desire to depart and be with Christ — that is indeed far better;

but it is more necessary to remain in this world because of you.

And being convinced of this, I know that I will remain and will be with you all again, so that you may advance and rejoice in the faith,

so that your boasting in Christ Jesus may increase because of me, when I come to you again.

Only, let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, you stand firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,

and not being frightened in any way by your opponents. For them this is a sign of destruction, but for you a sign of salvation, and this is from God.

For to you it has been granted not only to believe in Christ, but also to suffer for him,
