Many of us, when we pray, often hope that our life path will be made easier: no problems, no difficulties, and everything goes smoothly. However, the Bible never promises an easy path, but rather a strong heart to endure the difficult road. God cares more about shaping our character than merely giving temporary comfort.
Jesus Himself said, “The gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). Living by faith is indeed not always easy. But in difficulties, God is refining us, testing our faith, and growing our endurance.
Like an athlete who must go through intense training to be ready for competition, we too need to experience the process. Without that training, we will not be strong.
God knows that a tested heart is far more valuable than a life path without obstacles.
James 1:2-3 reminds us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
Perseverance is born from the process, not from shortcuts. When we learn to endure under pressure, we are being shaped into individuals who are more mature in faith.
The story of Job is a real example. He lost his wealth, family, and even his health. Yet, in the midst of that suffering, his heart remained anchored in God. In the end, he witnessed the greatness of God’s power and faithfulness.
Job was not given an easy path, but was given a heart that endures testing.
Rather than praying for all difficulties to disappear, let us learn to pray that our hearts remain steadfast. A prayer like David’s in Psalm 51:12 can be an example: “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit!”
God wants us to have willing, steadfast hearts that are not easily shaken, because with such a heart we can endure every situation.
When our hearts endure testing, we will no longer see difficulties merely as burdens, but as opportunities to grow. We will become more sensitive to God’s voice, more patient with others, and stronger in facing life’s storms. The path may still be steep, but our hearts are ready to walk through it.
Lord, we often ask for an easy way, yet You want to give us a strong heart. Teach us to see difficulties as opportunities to grow, and enable us to have hearts that endure testing. Let our faith not waver, but grow stronger in every process of life. Amen.
