To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.
(40-2) I waited patiently for the LORD; and He turned to me and heard my cry for help.

(40-3) He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, making my steps firm,

(40-4) He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see it and fear, and trust in the LORD.

(40-5) Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, or to those who have gone astray after lies!

(40-6) Many are the things You have done, O LORD my God, Your wondrous works and Your purposes for us. None can be compared with You! I would declare and speak of them, but they are too many to be numbered.

(40-7) You do not delight in sacrifice and offering, but You have opened my ears; burnt offering and sin offering You have not required.

(40-8) Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me;

(40-9) I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart.”

(40-10) I have proclaimed righteousness in the great assembly; I have not restrained my lips, as You know, O LORD.

(40-11) I have not hidden Your righteousness in my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth from the great assembly.

(40-12) You, O LORD, do not withhold Your mercy from me; may Your lovingkindness and Your truth keep me always!

(40-13) For troubles have surrounded me beyond number. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.

(40-14) Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; O LORD, make haste to help me!

(40-15) Let all those who seek to take my life be put to shame and confounded; let those who desire my harm be turned back and brought to dishonor!

(40-16) Let those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” be appalled because of their shame.

(40-17) Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; let those who love Your salvation continually say, “The LORD is great!”

(40-18) As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!
🕊️🙏📖 Summary of Psalm 40 – “The Faithfulness of God and the Response of a Yielded Heart”
Psalm 40 is a psalm of thanksgiving and petition. David remembers how God has saved him from ruin, and in response, he offers obedience and praise, not merely outward sacrifice. Yet in the midst of that praise, David also cries again for help, because of his guilt and because of the enemies that surround him.
This psalm reflects the life of a believer who is grateful for grace, yet still struggles within the reality of weakness and suffering.

➡️ David confessed that his sins were more numerous than the hairs on his head.
➡️ He was pursued by enemies, and his only hope was the Lord as helper and deliverer.
➡️ He still said: “I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought of me.”
