O God, give Your judgment to the king, and Your righteousness to the king’s son!

May he judge Your people with righteousness, and Your afflicted ones with justice!

May the mountains bring peace to the people, and the hills bring righteousness!

May he give justice to the afflicted among the people,
help the poor, but crush the oppressors!

May they fear him as long as the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!

May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth!
7
In his days may righteousness flourish, and peace abound, until the moon is no more!
8
May he rule from sea to sea, and from the River Euphrates to the ends of the earth!

May those who dwell in the wilderness bow before him, and his enemies lick the dust;
10
may the kings of Tarshish and of the islands bring gifts;
may the kings of Sheba and Seba offer tribute!
11
May all kings bow down before him, and all nations serve him!
12
For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted, and the one who has no helper;
13
he will have compassion on the weak and the needy, and he will save the lives of the needy.
14
He will redeem their lives from oppression and violence; their blood will be precious in his sight.
15
Long may he live! May gold from Sheba be given to him!
May prayer be made for him continually, and blessings be upon him all day long!
16
May there be abundance of grain in the land, waving on the tops of the mountains;
may its fruit flourish like Lebanon, and its grain like the grass of the earth.
17
May his name endure forever; may his name increase as long as the sun shines.
May all nations be blessed through him, and call him blessed.

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things!

Blessed be His glorious name forever;

Psalm 72 is the prayer of Solomon (or David’s prayer for Solomon) that describes an ideal kingdom under a king who is just and fears God.
Yet its picture goes beyond Solomon historically — this is a messianic prophecy pointing to Jesus Christ as the King of Peace, who will rule in righteousness and bring blessing to the whole earth.
This psalm closes the second section of the Book of Psalms with a note of victory, justice, and the glory of God.
