A Psalm of Asaph.
O God, the nations have come into Your inheritance; they have defiled Your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in heaps.

They have given the dead bodies of Your servants as food to the birds of the heavens, the flesh of Your beloved ones to the beasts of the earth.
3
They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.
4
We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to those around us.
5
How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire?
6
Pour out Your wrath upon the nations that do not know You, and upon the kingdoms that do not call upon Your name;
7
for they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his dwelling place.
8
Do not remember against us the iniquities of our fathers; let Your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are brought very low.
9
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for Your name’s sake.
10
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let the avenging of the blood of Your servants that is shed be known among the nations before our eyes.
11
Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You; according to the greatness of Your arm, preserve those appointed to die.
12
And render to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom the reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
13
So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, will give You thanks forever; we will show forth Your praise to all generations.
🕊️🙏📖 Summary of Psalm 79 – “A Cry for Forgiveness in the Midst of Ruin”
Psalm 79 is a national lament written by Asaph after the destruction of Jerusalem — most likely during the Babylonian invasion. The psalm describes deep suffering: the temple is defiled, the people are slain and left unburied, the city is ruined, and the nations mock Israel.
Yet in the midst of that lament, the psalmist does not only weep — he cries out to God for forgiveness and restoration. This psalm shows how believers may bring their pain before the Lord while still hoping in His mercy.
📌 1. The Suffering of the Nation and the Shame of Enemies (verses 1–4)
