Responding to False News with Spiritual Wisdom

In this digital era, information spreads very quickly. One piece of news can reach millions of people in just minutes. However, not everything we read or hear is true. Hoaxes and fake news often manipulate emotions, cause fear, and even divide relationships. As believers, we cannot simply go with the flow. We are called to respond to every piece of information with spiritual wisdom and the Word of God as our foundation.

Hoaxes: More Than Just Incorrect Information

Hoaxes are not just typos or misunderstandings. Hoaxes are often designed for specific purposes, such as spreading hatred, inciting, or creating confusion. The Book of Proverbs already warns, โ€œA perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friendsโ€ (Proverbs 16:28). This verse shows that spreading false news has serious social and spiritual consequences.

Spreading hoaxes is equivalent to participating in deceitful acts. And clearly, the Bible says, โ€œYou shall not bear false witness against your neighborโ€ (Exodus 20:16). So, even though it may seem trivial, sharing fake news means violating the principle of truth that God has established.

The Importance of Testing Everything

The Apostle Paul advised the Thessalonian church, “Test everything; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). This principle is very relevant when we receive information. Do not immediately believe something just because it is viral or comes from someone we know.

A wise spiritual step is to test every piece of information with prayer, common sense, and the Word of God. Ask yourself:

  • Does this news bring peace or does it cause fear?
  • Does this news build faith or destroy trust?
  • Have I verified its truth before sharing it?

With a careful attitude, we are less likely to be caught up in the flow of false information.

Controlling the Tongue and Fingers

In the digital age, our tongue does not only speak through the mouth but also through the fingers that type and share content. James writes, “Likewise, the tongue is a fire. It is a world of evil among the parts of the body” (James 3:6).

This verse reminds us that words, both spoken and written, have great power. Once something is shared, we cannot take it back. Therefore, we must be extra careful not to ignite the fire of division through what we write or spread on social media.

Being Light and Salt in the Midst of the Digital World

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14). In the context of the digital world, this means we are called to be sources of truth, not part of the flow of lies. While others are busy spreading hoaxes, we can be individuals who spread comfort, God’s word, and uplifting news.

Being light does not only mean avoiding darkness, but also bringing truth so that others do not go astray. In this way, we not only protect ourselves but also help others not to be trapped by falsehoods.

Practical Steps to Spiritually Respond to Hoaxes

To live according to the word, there are several concrete steps we can take:

  1. Pray before reacting. Do not rush to share or comment. Ask for God’s wisdom so you do not get trapped.
  2. Check the source of information. Is it trustworthy? Does it align with the facts?
  3. Test it with the Word. Does the content of the news align with the values of truth, love, and peace?
  4. Choose to build up. If the information is not beneficial, it is better not to forward it.
  5. Remember our identity. We are children of light called to reflect Christ in every aspect of life, including in the digital world.

Closing

Hoaxes and fake news will always exist as long as people want to deceive or manipulate. However, as believers, we have a strong provision: the Word of God, the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, and a willing heart to obey. By holding firmly to the truth of Christ, we can stand firm amid the flood of information, maintain a godly testimony, and be peacemakers.

As Jesus said, โ€œIf you abide in My word, you are truly My disciplesโ€ (John 8:31). So let us choose the Word, not hoaxes, as our guide in facing every piece of information.
