(12-18) And he stood on the shore of the sea.

(13-1) Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads; on its horns were ten crowns, and on its heads were names of blasphemy.

The beast that I saw was like a leopard, and its feet were like a bear’s feet, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And the dragon gave it his power, and his throne, and great authority.

And I saw one of its heads as though it had been wounded to death, but its deadly wound was healed. And the whole world marveled and followed the beast.

And they worshiped the dragon, because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like this beast? And who is able to make war against him?”

And a mouth was given to the beast, speaking arrogant words and blasphemies; and authority was given to it to act for forty-two months.

Then it opened its mouth to blaspheme God, to blaspheme His name and His dwelling place and those who dwell in heaven.

And it was allowed to make war against the saints and to overcome them; and authority was given to it over every tribe and people and language and nation.

And all who dwell on the earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain.

If anyone has an ear, let him hear!

If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword he must be killed.

Here is the endurance and faith of the saints.

Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and it had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon.

It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence. It causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

And it performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in the sight of all.

And it deceives those who dwell on the earth by the signs that were given to it to do in the presence of the beast. And it tells those who dwell on the earth to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

And it was given power to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could even speak and cause all who would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

And he causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead,

and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of his name.

Here is wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred sixty-six.

“Who is able to make war with him?” – the world is subdued, as though there were no equal to him.

✝️ 2. The Patience of the Saints (vv. 9–10)

“If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes. If anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed.”

• This is a call to perseverance and faith for the saints.
• They do not answer violence with violence — but endure in faith.

🦁 3. The Beast from the Earth (vv. 11–18)

“Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.”

• Characteristics:

• • Like a lamb (a spiritual appearance), but with a voice like a dragon (from the Devil).

  • Leads the world astray with miraculous signs, even bringing down fire from heaven.

  • Forces worship of the first beast.

Actions:

• Sets up a image of the beast and gives it breath so that it can speak.
• Kills anyone who will not worship the image.
• Forces everyone to bear a mark on the right hand or on the forehead — known as the “mark 666” — so they may buy and sell.

“This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man…”

• 666: often understood as the number of imperfect humanity (6, not 7).
• It likely refers to a symbol of human failure that exalts itself like God.
• Some interpret it as a code for Nero Caesar, though its application may be broader to world systems that reject God.

1. Sea beast = a political/global power that rejects God and oppresses His people.
