The Science of Hugs: God’s Design for Emotional Healing

Have you ever felt calmer after being hugged by someone you love? A simple hug can bring a sense of safety, as if lifting a heavy burden from the heart. But did you know that a hug is not only about human affection, but also part of God’s divine design to heal our souls?

The Science Behind Hugs

From a scientific perspective, hugging prompts the body to release oxytocin, a hormone often called the love hormone. This hormone helps us feel more connected, lowers stress, reduces fear, and even helps regulate heart rate and blood pressure.

In addition to oxytocin, hugging can also lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and strengthen the immune system. Research shows that people who receive hugs often are more resistant to illness and recover more quickly from emotional strain.

In other words, a hug is a “natural medicine” that God placed in our bodies to help one another.

A Biblical Perspective on Hugs

The Bible also repeatedly shows the importance of touch and warmth between people. Paul wrote, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15). This is not only about words, but also about tangible actions such as embracing in joy and sorrow.

Jesus Himself often touched the people He healed (Mark 1:41). Acts of touch do not only heal the body, but also the heart wounded by rejection and loneliness. A hug becomes a symbol of God’s love present through people.

Hugs as Divine Design

If we trace it further, a hug is a real expression of God’s design so that human? Wait. Need English only. Let’s fix.
