There are times when we feel numb. Not too sad, not happy either. Like a dull heart, no longer sensitive to what is around us, even to God. Have you ever wondered whether God still cares and understands that condition? Shouldnโt faith be full of passion, yet in reality we often walk through emotional emptiness?
The Science Behind Numb Feelings
In psychology, this condition is often called emotional numbness or blunted affect. It usually happens because of mental exhaustion, depression, prolonged stress, or trauma. The brain tries to protect itself by lowering emotional responses, so a person does not feel much of anything. It is the bodyโs survival mechanism, even though for the one experiencing it, it can feel like losing part of oneโs humanity.
In other words, numb feelings do not mean we are not alive; rather, the body is trying to conserve energy in the middle of pressure.
A Biblical Perspective: God Who Understands the Heart
The good news is, God not only understands passionate emotions, but also an empty heart. Psalm 139:2 says, โYou know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.โ In other words, even when we cannot feel anything, the Lord still knows what is in our hearts.
Jesus Himself once experienced a moment in Gethsemane when His soul was so distressed that it felt almost like death (Matthew 26:38). He knows what it is like to feel empty, weary, and nearly unable to take another step. That is why Hebrews 4:15 affirms, โFor we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses.โ
The Lord understands even when we ourselves do not understand our feelings.
Sharpening a Dull Heart Again
How can we come out of this numb emotional state?
- Come as you are. Do not wait to feel spiritual before praying. Even prayers offered in silence are heard by God.
- Fill your heart with the Word. The Word is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) that can sharpen a dull heart again.
- Open up through community. Spiritual friends can help us see light when our hearts feel dim.
- Care for your body too. Rest, enough sleep, and balanced nutrition often help emotional recovery.
Conclusion
Numb feelings do not mean God is far away. In the middle of that numbness, He is still present, understanding, and walking with us. When we can no longer feel, God still fully feels us. Even a numb heart is known by Him, because His love does not depend on the condition of our soul.
So do not be afraid of numb feelings. They are not a sign that God has left you, but an opportunity to discover that His love goes far beyond what you can feel.
