In this age, many people think that to make an impact, someone must first become famous. Influence is measured by the number of followers, public attention, or how viral we are online. But Jesus teaches a different way: being light does not have to begin on a big stage, but in a life that faithfully reflects His love, wherever we are.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden… Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” What is interesting is that Jesus did not say, “you must become famous,” but “let your light shine.” That means light is about the quality of our lives, not how bright the spotlight is.
Light can appear through small, sincere acts, such as forgiving even when hurt, helping without expecting anything in return, or living honestly in the midst of a compromising environment. All of this may not make the news, may not receive public praise, but in God’s eyes, it shines a real light.
Jesus Himself chose to be born in a stable, grow up in a simple family, and even in His ministry He avoided unnecessary fame. In Mark 1:45, when many people began to come to Him, Jesus withdrew to a solitary place. Jesus prioritized impact over the spotlight. He showed that purity of heart is more important than popularity.
One very relevant example in the Bible is the life of Tabitha (also known as Dorcas). In Acts 9:36, it says that “Tabitha was always doing good and helping the poor.” She was not famous, did not preach before crowds, but her life had a great impact. When she died, many people mourned her passing because so many had been helped by her. Her light touched the lives of others, even without a stage.
So never underestimate a simple but faithful life. God is not looking for people who go viral, but for people who shine. Being light is not about popularity, but about reflecting the character of Christ, even in the smallest things.
Lord, teach me to be a faithful light even when the world does not see it. Let my life radiate Your love in my words, attitudes, and actions every day. Use me to bring Your light wherever I go. Amen.
