Often we feel that we must always appear strong, spiritual, and “okay” before God. However, God does not ask us to pretend. He longs for us to come with honest hearts, as we are, including our wounds, doubts, and complaints.
The Psalms are full of examples of honesty. David was not hesitant to express his deepest feelings, even when he felt abandoned by God. “How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” (Psalm 13:2). Yet in the end, David also affirmed his faith: “But I trust in your unfailing love.” (Psalm 13:6). Honesty before God does not weaken faith; rather, it strengthens our relationship with Him.
Jesus Himself set an example when praying in Gethsemane. He honestly said, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.” (Matthew 26:39). This prayer reveals a real struggle.
However, Jesus also fully surrendered Himself: “But not as I will, but as You will.” This is the courage to be honest as well as obedient.
Honesty before God frees us from spiritual pretense. We do not need to hide our disappointments, fears, or even our anger. God values honest prayer far more than empty beautiful words. He knows our hearts better than we understand ourselves, so there is no point in hiding behind a spiritual mask.
When we dare to be honest, our hearts become open to restoration. We make room for the Holy Spirit to work, strengthen, and reaffirm us. Honesty is not a sign of weakness, but proof that we believe God loves us as we are.
Lord, teach us to have the courage to be honest before You. Help us not to pretend to be strong, but to come with hearts as they are. Restore and strengthen us, so that in every struggle, we continue to trust in Your faithful love. Amen.
