In a world that moves so fast and values instant results, faithfulness is often seen as old-fashioned or unimportant. Many people choose shortcuts, give up too soon, or turn away when things do not go as hoped. Yet, the story of Ruth in the Bible reminds us that faithfulness is never wasted before God.
Ruth was a Moabite woman whose life changed drastically after her husband died. She could have returned to her own people like Orpah, her sister-in-law. But Ruth chose to remain faithful to Naomi, her mother-in-law, even though the road ahead was unclear. Her words in Ruth 1:16 are well known, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”
Ruth’s faithfulness was not easy faithfulness. She had to leave her homeland, enter a foreign nation, and even bear the status of a poor widow. Yet her faithfulness opened the way for God to reveal His great plan. Ruth was eventually brought together with Boaz, a noble kinsman-redeemer, and from their line came King David, and even Jesus Christ.
What can we learn? First, faithfulness is evidence of faith. Ruth believed that the God Naomi worshiped was the living God, and she leaned on Him even though she did not yet know her future. Second, faithfulness produces blessings beyond logic. No one would have expected that a foreign woman like Ruth would be used by God to become an important part of the Messiah’s family line.
Often, we are tempted to give up when facing difficult situations: remaining faithful in a marriage under trial, faithful in ministry with little support, or faithful in faith when prayers have not yet been answered. But remember, the Lord sees faithfulness that others may not notice. Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”
Ruth’s faithfulness proves that faithfulness is not weakness, but strength that draws us closer to God’s plan. What we sow in faithfulness, even if small and unseen, will bear fruit in its time.
Lord, teach me to be faithful, even when the path I face is not always easy. Help me believe that You see every act of faithfulness and that You will never let it be wasted. Make my heart steadfast, like Ruth, who chose You above all else. Amen.
