Forgiveness often feels easy to talk about but hard to do. We can pray, “Lord, I want to forgive,” yet our hearts are still full of hurt, disappointment, and a sense of unfairness. However, the Bible reminds us that forgiveness is not an extra option, but a calling for every believer.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” These words affirm that forgiveness must begin with us first, not by waiting for others to change or apologize.
Sometimes we think, “I’ll forgive when he realizes his mistake.” But the truth is, forgiveness is not about waiting for someone else’s attitude; it is about our own hearts. Forgiving releases us from the chains of bitterness. By forgiving, we are placing justice in God’s hands, not forcing revenge. Romans 12:19 says, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath…”
Forgiving does not mean simply forgetting or pretending the wrong was right. Forgiving means choosing no longer to let that wound control our lives. When we forgive, we are not only helping others, but also setting ourselves free.
Jesus gave the greatest example. On the cross, when He was betrayed, beaten, and nailed, He still prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). If Jesus could forgive in such great suffering, then we too are called to learn to do the same, even though it is not easy.
Perhaps today there is a name or face that comes to your mind, someone who once hurt or disappointed you. It is time to stop waiting and take the first step. Forgiveness must begin with us, because we have already been forgiven by God first. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Lord, I come with a heart that is still wounded. I know You are calling me to forgive. Help me release all bitterness and let Your love fill my heart. Teach me to forgive, just as You first forgave me. Amen.
