Humans have a great curiosity. We often ask: Why does this happen? How can something exist? What is the reason? Science helps explain many things, but the question arises: must everything be explained? Or is there a time when we need to stop seeking proof and learn to trust?
Science and the Limits of Explanation
Science is indeed amazing at uncovering the secrets of the universe. From how the body works to the mysteries of galaxies, research continues to advance. However, science also has its limitations. Quantum physics, for example, often reveals phenomena that cannot be fully explained with simple logic. Even scientists acknowledge that many things remain mysteries.
This means, not everything can be fully understood by us. The human brain has limited capacity to comprehend things that go beyond logic. A sense of wonder toward these mysteries often leads us to humility.
Faith Answers When Reason Reaches Its Limit
The Bible emphasizes that faith is an essential part of spiritual life. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” In other words, faith fills the space where logical explanations end.
Jesus Himself once said to Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29). This does not mean blind faith, but rather faith that trusts in God’s character, even when physical evidence is not always present.
Learning to Live by Faith
How can we balance knowledge and faith?
- Value reason as a gift from God: God gave us brains to think, research, and learn.
- Recognize the limits of human ability: Deuteronomy 29:29 says, โThe secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children.โ There are mysteries that belong only to God.
- Train the heart to trust in God’s goodness: Faith is not merely logical agreement, but the conviction that God is faithful even when we do not see a way out.
- Do not fear mystery: Uncertainty often becomes the space where faith grows deeper.
Conclusion
Not everything must be explained, because not everything can be explained by humans. Science helps us understand many things, but faith leads us to a deeper conviction when logic stops working. So, when we do not find answers, it does not mean God is not at work. It is precisely there that faith gives us the strength to keep believing, because God is greater than any explanation.
