When We Lose Our Way but Resist Turning Back

Have you ever felt that you have traveled far in life, but actually the path taken was wrong? Even more complicated, sometimes we realize we are lost, yet reluctant to turn back. There is a sense of pride, fear of being laughed at, or simply not wanting to admit mistakes. Why does this often happen in human life, and what does the Bible say about a stubborn heart attitude?

Science Behind the Reluctance to Turn Back

In psychology, this phenomenon is known as the sunk cost fallacy, which is the tendency to continue something just because time, effort, or emotions have already been invested, even though we know the direction is wrong. The human brain finds it difficult to accept failure, so it is easier to force oneself to keep going rather than admit mistakes.

For example, someone who is lost on the road prefers to wander around rather than ask for directions. Or in daily life, some people stick to decisions that clearly cause harm because they feel “it’s already a loss to quit.” Psychology calls this the brain’s way of protecting self-esteem, even though in the end it brings greater losses.

Biblical Perspective on Turning Back

The Bible actually teaches that turning back is a sign of wisdom, not weakness. Proverbs 14:12 says, โ€œThere is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.โ€ A path that appears right in human eyes can end in destruction.

The story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:17-18 is a clear example. When he realized his way was wrong, he said, โ€œI will arise and go to my father.โ€ It was this decision to turn back that opened the way for restoration and the Father’s love.

Isaiah 55:7 also affirms, โ€œLet the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him.โ€ This means, God always opens the door for those who want to return.

Learning to Be Brave to Turn Back

How can we learn not to be stubborn?

  • Humbly admit mistakes: Admitting mistakes is not a sign of defeat, but a step toward growth.
  • Learn to listen to advice: Proverbs 19:20 reminds us, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”
  • Trust in God’s love: God does not shame those who return; rather, He welcomes them with joy.
  • Train yourself to let go of ego: In psychology, this reduces mental burden because we do not have to constantly defend wrong decisions.

Conclusion

When we are lost but refuse to turn back, we are actually resisting two things: the truth and ourselves. Science shows that this happens because of ego and pride, while the Bible reminds us that the wrong path only leads to destruction. But the good news is, it is never too late to turn back. God is always waiting at the end of the road with love ready to welcome us.
