When Feelings Don’t Match the Facts

Have you ever felt afraid of something that is actually harmless, or felt worthless even though the fact is that many people love you? That is the moment when feelings do not align with facts. This situation often leaves us confused, even feeling as if something is wrong within us. But is this normal? And how should we respond in the light of God’s Word?

Science About Deceptive Feelings

Scientifically, our brains do not always work based on logic. There is a part called the amygdala that regulates fear and emotion. Sometimes, the amygdala can “overreact” to a situation, even though the facts are actually safe. For example, someone may tremble when speaking in public, even though there is no real threat.

Psychology also explains that emotions are interpretations, not reality itself. In other words, just because we feel like a failure does not mean we truly are a failure. The brain can process experiences with bias, especially when influenced by past trauma or stress.

The Bible About Feelings and Facts

The Bible also reminds us that feelings cannot always be trusted. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” The human heart can deceive us, making us feel unworthy or unloved.

Yet the truth of God’s Word is far stronger than feelings. Romans 8:38-39 says, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life,… nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This spiritual fact remains true, even when we do not “feel” it.

How to Respond to This Imbalance

  1. Test your feelings against facts. Ask: “Does this feeling match reality, or is it only my fear?”
  2. Hold on to the Word as your foundation. Psalm 119:105 reminds us, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Word is a compass when the heart deceives.
  3. Learn to be calm before reacting. Simple techniques like taking deep breaths can help the brain become more rational.
  4. Believe that God is greater than our emotions. 1 John 3:20 says, “For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.”

Conclusion

Feelings are important, but they do not always align with facts. Science explains that the brain can misread a situation, while the Bible affirms that only God’s truth is certain. So when your heart feels different from reality, do not rush to be swept away by it. Remember that God’s love and promises are eternal facts that never change, even when our feelings rise and fall.
