When Our Hearts Are Too Busy to Hear God

Notifications never stop, targets come one after another, the to-do list grows longer. Gradually, the heart becomes crowded, but the spirit becomes quiet. Busyness that is not directed will rob spiritual sensitivity. We move quickly, but no longer listen. Jesus reminds us through the story of Martha and Mary. While Martha was busy with many things, Jesus said, โ€œMartha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good partโ€ (Luke 10:41-42). The good part is not merely working for the Lord, but sitting and listening to the Lord.

Elijah also learned the same lesson. He waited for God in the strong wind, earthquake, and fire, yet God appeared in the โ€œgentle whisperโ€ (1 Kings 19:12). Godโ€™s voice often comes softly, so a noisy heart will not catch it. Therefore, the Psalm advises, โ€œBe still, and know that I am Godโ€ (Psalm 46:11). Being still is not laziness. Stillness is a conscious choice to place God at the center of direction, not just the outcome.

Jesus Himself set an example of a healthy rhythm. โ€œVery early in the morning, while it was still dark, He got up and went out.โ€

Ia berdoa di sanaโ€ (Mark 1:35). Luke records the same habit, Jesus often withdrew to a quiet place to pray (Luke 5:16). If even the Son of God maintained silent space, how much more should we, who are easily distracted by routine.

How can a busy heart learn to listen again?

First, replace speed with sensitivity. Before starting the day, take five to ten minutes to read a passage of Scripture and be still for a moment. Repeat one verse as a prayer. For example, โ€œBe still, and know that I am Godโ€ (Psalm 46:11). Repeating the Word calms the inner noise.

Second, practice the rhythm of listening first, speaking later. โ€œEveryone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angryโ€ (James 1:19). Practice this in meetings, at home, and in digital spaces. Hold back your fingers before typing a reply. Ask yourself, โ€œWhat does God want me to grasp, not just what I want to say.โ€

Third, schedule micro sabbaths.

Regular pauses sharpen spiritual hearing.

Keempat, restore the center of your work. โ€œWhatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human mastersโ€ (Colossians 3:23). When God is the center, we are no longer controlled by false urgencies but led by true priorities. Faithfulness to what is necessary is more important than eagerness for what is busy.

Kelima, fix digital habits. Turn off unnecessary notifications, set gadget-free hours, choose readings that nurture growth. These small things are like opening a window to let a gentle breeze in. God often speaks; only our channels are too full.

Terakhir, obey small promptings. After listening, take the next step, no matter how small. Apologize, delay an emotional reply, help quietly, or set aside time for family prayer.

Spiritual ears become more sensitive when the heart obeys what is already clear. God rarely gives a complete map, but He faithfully lights a lamp for today’s steps.

If today you feel too busy to hear, know that God is not far. He waits in a quiet place. When you choose to sit at His feet, busyness remains, but the heart becomes clear again. And from that clarity, decisions will be born not from panic, but from reigning peace.

Father, calm our noisy hearts. Teach us to choose the best part, to sit and listen to You. Rearrange the rhythm of our lives, fill us with Your word and peace, and lead us to obey the small steps You show today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
