When We Give Up, Are Body and Soul Both Exhausted?

There are moments when we feel, “Enough is enough,” whether in work, ministry, or relationships. Interestingly, that desire to give up often comes not only from physical exhaustion, but also from inner weariness. The question is, are body and soul truly tired at the same time?

Physical Exhaustion: The Body’s Signal That It Needs Rest

Science explains that the body has an “alarm” in the form of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. When they are triggered continuously, for example by nonstop work or too little sleep, muscles weaken, the immune system declines, and the brain begins to lose focus. This physical fatigue can make us think more negatively and become more easily discouraged.

Soul Exhaustion: More Than Just Being Tired

Unlike the body, the soul grows weary when hope begins to fade. This often happens when:

  • Goals no longer feel meaningful
  • Efforts do not produce results
  • Feeling alone in the struggle

In psychology, this condition is similar to emotional burnout. But the Bible has known it for a long time. Psalm 42:6 says, “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?” This is a picture of inner exhaustion that cannot be healed by sleep alone.

The Relationship Between Body and Soul

The physical and the inner life affect one another. A weak soul makes the body tire more quickly, while a sick body makes the soul more vulnerable to despair. That is why Jesus invited His disciples to “come away and rest” (Mark 6:31), a solution that restores both.

Healing Total Exhaustion

  1. Regular rest – Not only sleep, but also pausing from demands.
  2. Sharing the burden – Both work burdens and burdens of the heart; do not carry them alone.
  3. Closeness to GodMatthew 11:28 gives a beautiful invitation: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Conclusion

When we give up, it is very likely that both body and soul are exhausted at the same time. Resting only one of them is not enough. God designed us as a whole being; restoring the body and reviving the soul will make us strong again to keep moving forward.
