Betrayal often feels like the deepest wound. It is not only emotionally painful but can also shake our faith. When someone we trust disappoints us, the most common question that arises is: “God, where are You when I am betrayed?”
Being betrayed does not mean God has abandoned us
When Joseph was sold by his own brothers (Genesis 37:28), he experienced a very painful form of betrayal. But in the midst of it all, the Bible says, “But the LORD was with Joseph” (Genesis 39:2). This serves as a reminder that God’s presence does not depend on how people treat us, but on His faithful promises.
We may not understand why God allows betrayal to happen. But the Bible does not promise a life without tears. What is promised is God’s presence in the midst of those tears. Psalm 34:19 says, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Jesus Himself was betrayed
The Lord Jesus Himself experienced betrayal by Judas, one of His closest disciples (Luke 22:47-48). He knows what it feels like to be betrayed by someone loved. So, when we weep because of betrayal, we do not weep alone. Jesus understands and is present with us in that pain.
Betrayal can be a path to purifying faith
Sometimes betrayal opens our eyes to who truly walks with us, and more importantly: who remains faithful even when all humans fail, God Himself. Romans 8:28 affirms, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him.” Even betrayal is not outside God’s plan to purify and strengthen our faith.
An opportunity to learn forgiveness
Forgiving does not mean forgetting or allowing someone to hurt us again, but it is an act of obedience that frees us from the chains of bitterness. Colossians 3:13 says, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
God is still present, even behind betrayal
If today you feel alone because of betrayal, believe this: God is not silent. He sees, He cares, and He is working. He heals, restores, and leads us to a better place. No tear is wasted before Him.
Cry out to Him. He hears.
